A U-shaped steel staircase is a staircase that rises in two flights joined by a landing, with the second flight running back parallel to the first. It is an efficient choice when you have a wide but limited-depth space, because it packs a full floor height into a compact footprint. We design and fabricate these staircases to measure, from the drawing through to galvanizing and installation.

What Makes a U-Shaped Steel Staircase Different

A U-shaped staircase, often called a double-return stair, climbs in one direction, turns on an intermediate landing, and returns in the opposite direction. The two flights sit side by side, so the staircase takes up roughly the width of two runs and only half the length a straight stair would need.

Steel suits this layout well. Its strength allows slim stringers and a light appearance, so the stair does not overwhelm the room, and the open structure lets daylight and sightlines pass through the middle of the stair.

Measuring and Planning Your Space

Before any drawing begins, we measure the opening carefully on site. The key dimensions are the total floor-to-floor height, the length and width available for the stair footprint, the position of the opening above, and any beams, columns or walls that could interfere.

  • Floor-to-floor height and the exact finished floor levels
  • Available width for both flights and the central gap
  • Position and size of the top opening and landing
  • Door swings, windows and wall finishes nearby

Careful measurement at this stage prevents costly adjustments later, when the steel is already in production.

Designing the Steps, Landing and Railings

Comfortable steps depend on balance between riser height and tread depth, and the landing must be large enough to turn safely. We set the geometry so each flight is consistent, then design the railings. For guidance on railing requirements, the Israeli standard SI 1142 is the general reference, but exact values should always be confirmed with your engineer.

Design choices to consider

Open risers give a lighter look, while closed risers feel more solid and can help with acoustics. Treads may be steel plate, perforated, or fitted with timber or other finishes, depending on the style you want.

Fabrication in Our Workshop

Once the drawing and specification are approved, the stringers, landing frame, treads and balusters are cut and welded in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv. Working in-house lets us check each component against the measured drawings before it leaves the workshop.

Connections are carefully aligned so that the two flights and the landing fit together accurately on site. Prefabricating in the workshop reduces time and disruption at the building.

Finishing for Durability

Exterior and high-humidity steel stairs benefit from hot-dip galvanizing, which protects the metal against corrosion over the long term. For colour and an additional protective layer, powder coating is applied after galvanizing.

Indoor stairs can be finished in a range of colours or treated to resemble other materials. We discuss the finish during the planning stage so it suits both the look and the environment where the stair will stand.

Installation and Final Checks

Installation starts with fixing the landing and first flight to the structure, then positioning the return flight and checking levels and alignment throughout. Anchors are chosen to suit the existing building construction.

Before handover, we check that all handrails are secure, that treads sit firmly, and that the staircase moves smoothly under use. A final inspection ensures the stair is ready for daily life.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a U-shaped steel staircase need?

It needs a width suited to two parallel flights plus a central gap, and less overall length than a straight stair rising the same height. The exact footprint depends on your floor height and the landing size, so we measure before designing.

Can a U-shaped steel staircase be installed in an existing building?

Yes, it is often fitted into existing buildings, provided the opening and structure can support it. We assess the site and the fixing points during the measurement visit.

Is steel a good choice for a staircase that will be used every day?

Steel is strong and durable, especially when galvanized or powder coated. Regular daily use is well suited to a properly fabricated steel stair.

What should I prepare before contacting you?

Photos of the space, a rough idea of the floor height, and any plans you have are helpful. We then arrange an on-site measurement and prepare a written specification for your approval.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering a staircase before measuring the exact floor-to-floor height and opening is a common error that leads to adjustments. Ignoring the landing size and the required safety rails can also cause the design to fail practical or regulatory checks.

Our recommendation

Measure twice, including the finished floor levels, and confirm the final height after any screed or flooring work is complete. Ask for a written drawing with step dimensions and railing details before approving production.

Summary

A U-shaped steel staircase suits compact, wide spaces when it is measured, designed and fabricated precisely. Careful planning and proper finishing ensure a safe, durable result.

Send us photos of your space and we will arrange an on-site
