Aluminum Window Delivery Inspection: Checklist Before You Sign
t399-36

Before accepting aluminum windows, check each unit against the approved drawing, inspect the frames, glass and hardware for damage, and test that the opening and locking work smoothly. Note any problem on the delivery note and photograph it before signing, since open-and-check at the moment of delivery protects you best.
Compare the Delivery With Your Approved Drawing
Before anything else, lay the delivery note next to the drawing and specification you approved. Confirm the number of units, the window type and the opening direction of each one. Check that the marking or label on each unit matches its position on the plan, so the window that belongs in the bedroom is not the one going into the kitchen.
Measure the overall width and height of a few units against the drawing. Small differences matter when the frame has to fit an opening that was already built.
Inspect the Aluminum Frame and Finish
Walk around each frame in good light. Look for dents, scratches, bent corners and gaps where the profiles meet. Check that the surface finish, whether powder coating or anodized, is even in color and free of bubbles, runs or rough spots.
- Corners should be tight with no visible gap
- The surface should be free of deep scratches
- Drainage slots should be clear and open
Check the Glass Carefully
Glass is the most common source of damage in transit. Look for chips, cracks and scratches on both faces, and check the edges of the sealed unit for any sign of moisture or fogging between the panes. Look at the glass from several angles, since some defects only show when the light changes.
Make sure the glass type matches what you ordered, such as clear, tinted or with a specific coating, and that any safety marking is present where it should be.
Test Hardware, Handles and Locks
Open and close every window that is operable. The movement should be smooth and quiet, without catching or rubbing. Turn the handle and confirm that the lock engages fully and that the window closes flush against the seals.
Check the hinges, friction stays and any stay arms. Loose screws or missing pieces are much easier to deal with on the day than weeks later.
Look at Seals, Gaskets and Accessories
Run a hand along the gaskets and brush seals. They should sit evenly in their channels, without tears, flat spots or sections pulled out. Confirm that every accessory listed on the order is in the packing, such as screens, handles, keys or fixing brackets.
Remove protective film only when needed for inspection, and keep it on any surface that will be exposed to plaster, paint or site dust until installation is complete.
Document Issues Before You Sign
If you find damage or a mismatch, write it on the delivery note before signing. Describe the problem clearly, such as the window position and the nature of the defect, and take photos from a distance and close up. Ask the driver or site representative to acknowledge the note.
Signing a clean delivery note without remarks can make it harder to claim for damage later, so take the few extra minutes to record everything.
Frequently asked questions
Should I inspect the windows before the driver leaves?
Yes, the driver is usually still available at that point. Checking before they leave lets you note problems on the delivery note and arrange a replacement or repair quickly.
What if the glass is slightly scratched?
Note it on the delivery note with photos. Minor surface marks may still need to be assessed, so ask the supplier how they want to handle it before installation.
Can I install the windows if I find a small defect?
It is better to pause and discuss it first. Installing a unit with an unresolved defect can make it difficult to prove the damage was present at delivery.
How do I check the window size?
Measure width and height at the frame's outer edges and compare them with the drawing. Small tolerances are normal, but anything clearly outside the plan should be raised before fitting.
Common mistakes to avoid
Signing the delivery note without opening the windows and checking the glass is the most common error. Once the note is signed clean, proving damage that happened in transit becomes much harder.
Our recommendation
Inspect each unit in good daylight with the drawing in hand, and photograph any defect before the driver leaves. Keep the protective film on until installation so surfaces stay clean during the building work.
Summary
A short, careful inspection on delivery day checks the frames, glass, hardware and seals against your approved drawing. Record any issue on the delivery note before signing.
