Architectural Metalwork Mockups: Test Before Full Production

t503-33

An architectural metalwork mockup is a physical sample of a detail, such as a railing joint, a finish or a fixing, made before the full order is produced. It lets architects and designers check color, texture, welds and proportions on real material. Requesting one early reduces surprises and changes later in the project.

What an Architectural Metalwork Mockup Is

A mockup is a short, real piece of the work made in the same materials and finishes planned for the project. It can be a corner of a railing, a section of a gate frame, a bracket, or a panel with the chosen coating. Unlike a drawing or a screen image, a mockup shows how steel, aluminum or stainless steel actually looks and feels in hand and in daylight.

For designers, the value is in the details: how a joint is resolved, how a profile turns a corner, and how a finish reacts to light and touch.

When a Mockup Is Worth Requesting

A mockup makes most sense when the design depends on precise appearance or when the material choice is new to the team. Typical cases include:

  • Powder coating or a special finish where color must match a sample
  • Stainless steel works where brushing or polishing direction matters
  • Glass railings with a specific fixing or spigot detail
  • Steel-look profile windows and doors where frame proportion is critical

How the Process Works at Techno Kol Uzi

Start with an inquiry that includes drawings or photos and a note of the detail you want tested. We review the request, take measurements if the sample depends on site conditions, and agree on a written specification for the mockup. Once you approve it, the sample is produced in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv, using the same process planned for the full order.

The finished mockup is shown to you before any full production begins, so approval is based on the actual piece.

Finishes and Details to Check on the Sample

Use the mockup to check what drawings cannot show well:

  • Color and gloss of the powder coating or galvanized surface
  • Weld appearance and grinding quality at visible joints
  • Edge treatment, radii and how profiles meet
  • Fixing method and how it will look once installed

Confirm load and safety requirements with your engineer. For railings, the Israeli standard SI 1142 applies, and exact values should be checked with the engineer rather than taken from a sample alone.

Practical Tips for Designers

Ask for the mockup to be shot in natural light, and compare it against the actual building materials it will sit next to, such as stone, plaster or timber. Mark the sample with the finish code and the date of approval so the production run matches it. If the detail involves several trades, share the mockup with the contractor so that installation follows the same reference.

Keep notes on any adjustments you request. A short written approval protects both the design and the schedule.

After Approval: Moving to Full Production

Once the mockup is approved in writing, the full order is produced to the same specification. Any change after approval should be recorded as a revision, since even a small change in profile or finish can affect the result. Our team keeps the approved sample reference through production and finishing so that the delivered work matches what you signed off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay for a mockup?

Please ask us directly for the current terms for a sample or mockup, as they depend on the detail and materials requested. We will confirm everything in writing before any work starts.

How long does a mockup take?

Timing depends on the detail, the finish and our current workload, so we confirm the schedule when we review your request. We will not commit to a timeline before reviewing the specification.

Can you match a color from a sample I provide?

We can work to a color reference you supply, and the mockup lets you check the match before the full order. Final appearance can vary slightly with lighting, so compare the sample in the intended setting.

What should I send with my request?

Send photos or drawings of the detail, the material and finish you have in mind, and any dimensions or site conditions. This helps us prepare an accurate written specification for the mockup.

Common mistakes to avoid

Approving a finish from a screen or a small swatch without seeing it on the real profile in daylight. Skipping the mockup for visible joints and then discovering the weld or edge treatment does not suit the design.

Our recommendation

Choose the one detail that carries the most visual weight, such as a corner, a joint or a handrail end, and request a mockup of that alone. Approve it in writing with the finish code and the lighting conditions you checked it under.

Summary

An architectural metalwork mockup lets designers approve finishes and details on real material before full production. Requesting one early protects the design, the schedule and the final result.
