Bespoke Iron Fence Designs for Historic Properties

t307-25

Bespoke iron fence designs for historic properties are custom-made fences that match the proportions, patterns and character of the original building. They are measured on site, drawn to specification, fabricated in our Tel Aviv workshop and finished for durability in the local climate. A well-made period fence protects the property while respecting its architectural history.

Why historic buildings need a fence that fits the period

An older building has its own visual language: the rhythm of its openings, the thickness of its walls and the style of its ironwork. A modern off-the-shelf fence often looks out of place next to it, and it can quietly reduce the value of the facade. A fence designed for the period keeps the street view coherent and lets the building keep its character.

Historic properties also tend to have more complex conditions, such as uneven ground, existing stone bases or heritage restrictions on what can be altered. Starting from the building itself, rather than from a catalogue, gives you a result that belongs there.

Studying the original design language

Before any drawing begins, we look at the facade, the entrance, the existing railings and any remaining ironwork on the property. We note the spacing of verticals, the scale of scrolls and finials, the height of the base and the way the fence meets the wall. Old photographs or drawings, if you have them, are very helpful.

  • Bar spacing and thickness that suit the proportions of the building
  • Top details such as spear points, rings or simple caps
  • Gate style and how it aligns with the entrance

Choosing between iron and aluminum

Traditional wrought-style iron offers the most authentic look and the strongest presence, and it suits most heritage facades well. Aluminum is lighter, does not rust and is a sensible choice where a very slender profile is wanted or where maintenance access is limited. Both can be shaped to period patterns.

Iron is hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated to protect it in the coastal Tel Aviv climate. Your engineer or our team can advise which material suits the span, the load and the setting.

From site measurement to drawing

The process starts with an inquiry and photos sent to us. We then visit the site to measure the exact lengths, levels and wall conditions. Based on these measurements we prepare a drawing and a written specification showing the pattern, dimensions, materials and finish. Nothing goes into production until you have reviewed and approved this document.

Measuring on site matters most with older buildings, where walls are rarely perfectly straight or level. Working from real conditions prevents fitting problems later.

Making it safe and compliant

A fence on a historic property still has to be safe. Railings and guards in Israel are referred to the SI 1142 standard, which covers general requirements for these elements. We design with safety in mind, but exact dimensions and loads should always be confirmed with your structural engineer or building inspector, especially where heritage approvals are involved.

Planning for approval early often saves time. We can provide drawings that your architect or the local authority can review.

Installation and long-term care

Our fences are fabricated in our workshop at 37 Rival Street and then installed on site, with fixings chosen for the wall or base they connect to. Stone and older masonry need particular care, so we adapt the fixing method to the existing material rather than forcing a standard detail.

Routine care is simple: an occasional wash to remove salt and dust, and prompt touch-up if the coating is scratched. Good care keeps a period fence looking as it did on the day it was installed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match the design of an existing historic fence?

Yes, where the original is still present or documented in photographs. We measure the existing pattern and reproduce its proportions and details as closely as the material and current standards allow.

Is iron or aluminum better for a heritage building?

Iron usually gives the most authentic appearance and presence, while aluminum is lighter and maintenance-free. The right choice depends on the design, the setting and how the fence will be used.

Do you need to visit the property before quoting a design?

A site visit is important for accurate measurement, especially with older walls and uneven ground. We usually start with your photos and then measure on site before preparing the drawing.

Will the fence need approval from heritage authorities?

It depends on the property and its status. We recommend checking with your architect or the relevant authority early, and we can provide drawings to support that process.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing a standard modern pattern without considering the facade often spoils the look of a historic building. Skipping on-site measurement or ignoring uneven ground leads to fitting problems and a fence that does not sit correctly.

Our recommendation

Start from the building itself: photograph the facade and any existing ironwork, then have the fence drawn to match its proportions. Confirm safety details with your engineer before production.

Summary

Bespoke iron and aluminum fences let historic properties gain security and privacy while keeping their period character. Each design starts from measurement and drawing, so the result fits the building.
