Checking Ground Levelness Before Installing a Pergola

t376-3

t376-3

Before a pergola is installed, the ground where its posts will stand must be checked for levelness, slope and firmness. An uneven surface affects post lengths, beam alignment and how the structure sits over time. Our team measures the ground on site and adjusts the design to suit it before any metal is cut.

Why Ground Levelness Matters for a Pergola

A pergola is a frame of posts, beams and rafters that must stand straight and square. If the ground under the posts is uneven, the posts will not reach the same height, and the top beams will tilt or twist. This can make the structure look wrong and can put stress on joints that were not designed to carry it.

Level ground also helps water drain away from the base of the posts, which protects the metal and the footing over the years. Checking levelness early saves time and avoids rework later.

How to Check the Ground Before Installation

Start by marking the corners of the planned pergola area. Then measure the height difference between each corner and the lowest point using a long spirit level or a laser level and a measuring tape.

  • Measure diagonally as well as across each side.
  • Note any soft, loose or uneven soil.
  • Check where rainwater collects after a storm.

Write down the differences so they can be included in the drawing.

What to Do When the Ground Is Not Level

Most uneven ground can be handled in the design. Posts can be cut to different lengths, or the base plates can be set at different heights to bring the top frame level. For larger slopes, the patio may need some leveling with compacted fill or a concrete footing adjusted to the correct height.

Soft or disturbed soil needs proper compaction or a stronger footing. The right solution depends on the slope, the soil type and the size of the structure, so it should be decided together with the engineer.

Our Measurement and Planning Process

Our process begins with an inquiry where you send photos of the area. We then visit the site and take exact measurements, including ground levels and the position of walls, drains and existing structures.

  • On-site measurement of levels and dimensions
  • A drawing with a written specification
  • Your approval before production starts

This ensures the pergola is designed for your ground, not for an assumed flat surface.

From Factory to Installation

Once the drawing is approved, the iron or aluminum parts are manufactured to measure in our workshop at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Posts and beams are finished with hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the material and the location, to protect them from weather.

On installation day, the base points are set according to the measured levels, and the frame is fixed and checked again for level and alignment before the work is considered complete.

Preparing Your Patio Area

You can help the process by clearing the planned area, keeping access to the site open, and pointing out any underground pipes or cables you know about. Make sure the site is accessible for the installation team and that any loose debris is removed.

If you plan to change the ground level later, such as adding paving or tiles, tell us in advance so the post heights can account for the final surface.

Frequently asked questions

Does a pergola need completely flat ground?

No, a perfectly flat surface is not required. The posts and base points can be adjusted so the frame is level even when the ground has some slope.

Who checks the levelness of the ground?

Our team measures the ground on site as part of the planning visit. The measurements are included in the drawing before production begins.

Can an uneven patio be fixed before the pergola is installed?

Yes, the ground can be leveled with compacted fill or prepared footings. We advise on the best approach, and exact requirements are confirmed with the engineer.

Should I level the ground myself before contacting you?

You do not need to level it yourself. Send us photos of the area and we will explain what needs to be checked during the site visit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many people assume the ground is level by eye and skip measuring, which often leads to posts of the wrong height. Ignoring soft soil or drainage paths can also cause the structure to shift over time.

Our recommendation

Measure the ground at several points, including the diagonals, before you decide on the pergola size and location. Share these measurements with your supplier so the design matches the real site.

Summary

Checking ground levelness before installing a pergola protects the structure's alignment, stability and lifespan. Accurate on-site measurement and a clear drawing make the installation smooth and reliable.
