Design Planning for a Custom Iron Pergola Layout

t376-7

t376-7

A custom iron pergola starts with measuring your outdoor space and deciding how the structure should relate to the house, the sun and the view. Techno Kol Uzi turns that information into a written specification and drawing, produces the pergola in our Tel Aviv factory, and installs it once you approve the design.

Start with your goals and the site

Before any drawing, think about how you will use the space. A pergola for shade over a dining table needs different dimensions than one framing a garden view or supporting climbing plants. Note which direction the sun comes from, where the wall of the house is, and where the main walkways and doors are.

  • Intended use: dining, lounging, parking shade or planting support
  • Sun direction and the hours of strongest light
  • Attachment options: a wall, existing columns or free-standing posts

Clear answers to these questions make the rest of the planning faster and more precise.

On-site measurement

After your inquiry with photos, our team visits the site to measure. We record the overall footprint, the height available, the levels of the floor or ground, and any obstacles such as drains, pipes or existing fixtures. Measurements are taken on site rather than estimated from photos, because small differences matter when metal is cut to fit.

Tell us early about anything that may change later, such as a planned tree, a future wall or a new lighting line, so it can be considered in the layout.

Drawing and written specification

Based on the measurements, we prepare a drawing that shows the plan view and elevation of the pergola, the position of posts and beams, the spacing of the slats or roof elements, and the connection to the building or ground. A written specification accompanies the drawing and lists materials, dimensions, finish and installation method.

What you approve

  • Dimensions and overall height
  • Beam and rafter spacing
  • Material choice: iron, aluminum or a combination
  • Finish colour and coating

Please review the drawing carefully. Changes are simplest before production begins.

Client approval

Once you sign off on the drawing and specification, the order moves to production. Any structural or layout question should be settled at this point, because the factory works from the approved documents. If you are working with an architect, interior designer or contractor, we can send the drawing to them as well so the whole project stays aligned.

Approval also fixes the details that cannot be changed easily later, such as the position of fixings and the exact dimensions of the structure.

Factory production and finishing

Production takes place in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv, where the family-run team has worked in iron, aluminum and steel since 1945. Each element is cut, welded and assembled to the approved drawing. Finishing is applied after fabrication so the protective coating covers the whole piece.

Depending on the material and the look you want, finishing options include hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating. We will recommend the right finish for your location and exposure before production starts.

Installation on site

On installation day, our crew brings the finished elements to your property and fixes them according to the approved specification. Posts are set or anchored, beams are mounted, and the roof elements are fitted and checked for level and alignment. Before we leave, we review the finished pergola with you and confirm that everything matches the drawing.

For structural fixings or connections to a building, exact values and requirements are checked with the engineer, and the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 is considered where it applies.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the planning process take before production starts?

The timing depends on the site visit, how quickly you review the drawing, and the current production schedule. Your drawing and specification will be prepared after the on-site measurement, and production begins once you approve them in writing.

Can I change the design after approving the drawing?

Small changes are possible before production starts, but changes after fabrication begins are harder and may require new work. That is why we ask you to review the drawing and specification carefully before signing off.

Should I choose iron or aluminum for a pergola?

Iron gives a strong, traditional look and suits heavier structures, while aluminum is lighter and easier to handle for larger spans. We recommend the material based on your design, the size of the pergola and the exposure of the site.

Do you install the pergola or only manufacture it?

We manufacture in our Tel Aviv factory and install on site as part of the process. The installation follows the approved specification and includes a final check with you before we finish.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many clients skip the site measurement or choose the layout from photos alone, which leads to fit problems later. Leaving the sun direction, attachment points and future plans out of the brief often forces expensive changes after production has started.

Our recommendation

Mark the planned footprint on the ground with string or tape before the site visit so you can judge the size and position in real space. Share the sun direction and any future plans in your first message so the drawing reflects how you will actually use the pergola.

Summary

A custom iron pergola is planned in clear steps: site goals, measurement, approved drawing, factory production, finishing and installation. Careful early decisions keep the result accurate and the process smooth.
