Expanded Metal Mesh Facades: Ventilation and Transparency

t495-18

t495-18

An expanded metal mesh facade is a skin made from metal sheet cut and stretched into an open diamond or staggered pattern, letting air and light pass while still screening the building. Designers use it for shading, privacy and a layered look, and its finish, mesh geometry and frame detailing largely determine how it performs and ages. Each panel is made to measure at our Tel Aviv workshop, so the pattern and fixings suit your specific design.

What expanded metal mesh is

Expanded metal is produced by slitting a metal sheet and stretching it, which opens the material into a net of diamond or staggered openings without removing any material. The result is a rigid, self-supporting mesh that can be cut and framed like a panel.

For facades, the open area, strand width and sheet thickness set the character of the screen. A tight pattern reads as nearly solid from a distance, while a larger opening gives a lighter, more transparent layer. Because the mesh is formed from a single sheet, it keeps good stiffness for its weight.

Ventilation and daylight

Mesh facades let air move through the layer, which helps when a building needs cross-ventilation at balconies, plant rooms or parking levels. The open area also reduces direct sun on glazing behind the screen, lowering heat gain without a fully closed wall.

  • Choose open area according to the ventilation or daylight target.
  • Test how the pattern looks against the interior lighting at night.

Daylight passes through the openings but is diffused, so interiors stay soft rather than striped with sharp shadows.

Visual transparency and layering

The appeal of mesh is its ability to change with the viewer's position. From close up you see the individual strands, from a distance the surface reads as a single plane, and at an angle the layers behind become visible. Designers often place mesh a set distance in front of glass or solid walls to create depth.

Consider the gap between mesh and the building face, since it affects both shadow play and maintenance access. A small gap gives a crisp shadow, a larger one gives a floating, lighter effect.

Finishes and durability

The finish decides how the facade will age and how it will look in the Israeli climate, with its sun, salt air in coastal areas and high humidity. Common options include hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating for iron and steel mesh, and natural or anodized finishes for aluminum and stainless steel.

Points to specify

  • Base material and thickness for the required stiffness
  • Protective coating system suited to exposure
  • Colour and gloss level, checked on a sample

Framing, fixings and detailing

Mesh is almost always held in a perimeter frame, and the frame detail is where many facades succeed or fail. The frame must carry the panel weight, resist wind load and allow for thermal movement. Fixings should be hidden where possible and made from compatible metals to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Panel size is another decision. Larger panels reduce the number of joints but need more robust framing. Exact load and structural values are confirmed with the structural engineer for each project.

Working with us on a mesh facade

Our process starts with your drawings, sample preferences and photos of the site. We take on-site measurements, then prepare a written specification covering mesh pattern, frame profile, finish and fixing method for your approval. Production takes place in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv, followed by finishing and installation.

Sending a material sample request early helps you compare openness and colour before the design is locked.

Frequently asked questions

Does expanded metal mesh block wind?

It reduces wind speed and turbulence while letting air pass, so it is useful as a screen without fully sealing the facade. The exact wind load on the frame is calculated by the engineer for the project.

Which finish is best for a coastal building?

A hot-dip galvanized base with a powder coat, or stainless steel, usually performs best in salty, humid air. The right choice depends on the exposure and the expected maintenance.

Can the mesh pattern be customised?

Yes, the mesh opening size, strand orientation and sheet thickness can be selected to suit the design and performance goals. Samples help you confirm the look before production.

How far should mesh sit from the building?

The gap depends on the shadow effect and access for cleaning and maintenance you want. Designers usually test a few distances on a mock-up before fixing the frame depth.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is choosing the pattern from a small sample without checking how it reads at full facade scale and in changing light. Another is specifying the finish and fixings without considering the coastal or humid exposure of the site.

Our recommendation

Build a full-size mock-up or sample panel and view it at the distances and times of day that matter for the project before approving the pattern and finish. Specify the frame, fixings and coating together so the whole system is compatible.

Summary

Expanded metal mesh gives facades ventilation, daylight control and layered transparency, with performance set by pattern, finish and framing. Early samples and a clear specification make the result predictable.
