Glass Railing Installation Sequence for Contractors On Site

t339-11

t339-11

Glass railings should be installed after the structural base, slabs and wet trades are finished, but before final finishes that could be damaged by handling. The correct order is: confirm the base and measurements, fix the posts or base channels, set levels, install the glass panels, then seal, check and protect the work.

Confirm the Base Before Anything Else

Before the railing crew arrives, the base must be ready. Concrete edges, stair nosings and balcony slabs should be cast, cured and checked for level. Any openings for anchors or channels should be marked and confirmed against the drawing, not guessed on site.

Ask the contractor to confirm slab edge tolerances in writing. Small deviations here cause the most trouble later, because glass panels are cut to fit a defined opening.

Coordinate With the Wet Trades

Plastering, tiling and waterproofing often run late and damage railings if they come after installation. Agree on a schedule where the railing team works after the wet trades have left the edge area dry and clean.

  • Waterproofing and screed completed and cured
  • Plaster and paint finished at the base line
  • Tiling of balcony floors done, or edge protection in place

Fix the Posts or Base Channels

Once the base is confirmed, the posts, base channels or shoes are fixed. Anchors must suit the substrate, and fixing positions should be checked against the drawing before drilling. Installing the base first gives the glass a stable reference for every later step.

Keep the fixing area free of debris and dust, which can affect the grip of chemical anchors and the fit of channels.

Set Levels and Check Alignment

Use a level and a string line to check that the top rail or base line is straight and at the correct height. Small errors multiply across a long run, so correct them now rather than shimming glass later.

Railing height and gap requirements follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 in general terms. Exact values should be checked with the engineer for each project, not taken from a rule of thumb.

Install the Glass Panels and Handrail

Glass should be lifted and placed by at least two people, using suction cups or proper handling equipment. Set each panel into its channel or clamp, keeping the spacing and bite consistent with the specification. Fit the handrail or top profile once the glass is secure.

  • Keep protective film on the glass until the final clean
  • Never force a panel into a channel that does not fit
  • Tighten clamps evenly, not one side at a time

Seal, Inspect and Protect the Finished Work

Apply sealant or gaskets as specified and allow them to cure before loading the railing. Walk the full length, checking fixings, glass seating, handrail continuity and any gaps. Record the inspection so the handover is clear.

After inspection, protect the railing from paint overspray, grinding dust and tools from later trades. A short protection plan prevents costly repairs at the end of the job.

Frequently asked questions

Should glass railings go in before or after plastering?

Generally after, so plaster splashes and dust do not damage the glass or the finished profiles. Fixing the base before plaster is fine if the area is protected.

Who should confirm the railing measurements?

The railing supplier should take the final on-site measurement after the slab edges are finished. This reduces the risk of panels being cut to the wrong size.

Can the handrail be installed before the glass?

It depends on the system. In many designs the handrail is fitted after the glass is seated, so check the drawing and the supplier's method first.

How do I protect glass during site work?

Keep the protective film on until handover, store panels flat and upright on padding, and keep grinding and welding away from installed glass.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is installing glass before the wet trades and slab work are finished, which leads to chipped glass and damaged profiles. Another is fixing posts without checking levels first, forcing panels to fit.

Our recommendation

Agree on a written installation sequence with all trades before the first panel arrives on site. A single shared schedule saves more time than any single technique.

Summary

Install glass railings after the base and wet trades are finished, follow a fixed order from fixings to glazing, and protect the work until handover.
