Glass Railing Installation Sequence: Order of Work on Site

t336-41

t336-41

A glass railing is installed in a fixed order: survey and confirm the substrate, fix the base channel or posts, set the anchoring and levelling, install the glass panels, then seal, check and clean. Following this sequence prevents rework, protects the glass and keeps the line and height accurate.

Site Survey and Preparation

Before any material arrives on site, the installer should walk the full length of the balcony or stair and confirm the actual dimensions against the approved drawing. Check the substrate for level, cracks, and whether the edge is strong enough to carry anchors. Mark the finished railing line and the required height on the wall or slab.

  • Confirm the drawing revision with the supervisor
  • Check edge strength and cover over reinforcement
  • Clear the work area and protect finished surfaces

Any mismatch found now is far cheaper to solve than after the glass is cut.

Fixing the Base Channel or Posts

The base is installed first because it sets the line for everything else. For a base-channel system, fix the channel along the marked line using the specified anchors, keeping it straight and at the correct offset from the edge. For post systems, set each post plumb and check the spacing against the drawing before the adhesive or grout cures.

Check the channel with a long level or string line along its full length, not only at the ends. A small error here will show in every panel.

Anchoring, Levelling and Alignment

Once the base is in place, tighten the anchors to the specified torque and recheck alignment. Adjust levelling shims or spacers so the top of the channel or handrail runs evenly. Confirm that the height above the finished floor matches the drawing, and that any corner or transition posts are correctly oriented.

Exact load and fixing values should come from the engineer's specification. If the anchors seem unsuitable for the substrate, stop and consult the engineer rather than improvising.

Setting the Glass Panels

Handle glass with clean gloves and keep suction cups or lifting aids in good condition. Lower each panel carefully into the channel or onto its clamps, using the spacer and gasket pieces specified for the system. Keep the glass off hard edges and never force a panel into a space that does not fit.

  • Install from one end, working in a consistent direction
  • Check each panel for plumb and gap before tightening
  • Keep the protective film on until the final cleaning

Sealing, Tightening and Final Checks

After the panels are seated, fit the cap rail, handrail or clamps and tighten them evenly. Apply sealant or gaskets only where the system requires them, and use products compatible with the glass and the metal. Allow the specified curing time before loading the railing.

Run a final check: panels aligned, gaps even, fixings tight, no chips on the edges, and the handrail firm when pushed by hand.

Cleaning, Handover and Documentation

Remove protective film, clean the glass with a suitable non-abrasive cleaner, and wipe away any sealant or adhesive residue promptly. Walk the completed run with the supervisor or client, note any snags, and resolve them before leaving site.

Record the completed works with photographs and a short checklist, so the handover is clear and any future questions can be answered quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Should the base be fixed before the glass is delivered?

Yes, in most cases the base or posts are fixed first and checked for level and line. This lets the glass be fitted to a confirmed structure rather than an assumed one.

What is the most common error during installation?

The most common error is an out-of-line base channel, which causes every panel to sit off. Checking alignment along the full length before tightening prevents this.

Can the railing be used as soon as it is fixed?

No, the sealant and fixings need the specified curing time, and the railing should be fully checked first. Load testing should follow the engineer's requirements.

Who checks the railing against the Israeli standard?

The railing should be verified against the applicable Israeli railing standard SI 1142 with the responsible engineer. Exact values are confirmed in the project specification, not assumed on site.

Common mistakes to avoid

Installing glass before the base is confirmed level and aligned is the most costly mistake. Forcing panels to fit or tightening fixings unevenly can crack the glass and throw the whole line out.

Our recommendation

Check the base line along its full length before any glass is handled, and keep a written checklist for each stage. Treat the sequence as fixed: survey, base, anchor, glass, seal, check.

Summary

Follow the order of work: survey, base, anchoring and levelling, glass setting, sealing and final checks, then cleaning and handover. Doing each stage in sequence protects the glass and the schedule.
