Glass Railing Mockup: How to Test a Design Before You Order

t343-48

t343-48

A glass railing mockup is a small, temporary sample of the railing system, built with the same glass, posts and finish you plan to use. It lets you check look, feel, sightlines and fixing details before committing to the full balcony or stair order.

What a Glass Railing Mockup Actually Is

A mockup is a short section of railing, usually one or two posts with the glass panel fitted between them, built at our workshop or set up on site. It is not a finished product for your building, but it uses the real materials, so what you see is what you will get.

Mockups are useful because glass railings look very different in a showroom photo than they do on your own balcony with your light, your view and your wall colour.

What to Check on the Sample

Before approving anything, look at the sample from the positions people will actually use it: standing inside, sitting, and looking out from the stairs.

  • Sightlines and how much the posts or base channel interrupt the view
  • Glass tint, edge finish and any visible reflections
  • Feel of the handrail, if one is included
  • Colour and texture of the powder coating or stainless finish
  • How the glass sits in the clamps or channels

Testing in Your Real Environment

Where possible, we suggest setting the mockup at the actual location, or as close to it as we can manage. Daylight, shade and the colour of nearby walls change how a railing reads. Ask the people who will live with it to see it too, not just the person making the decision.

Take photos at different times of day and note anything that bothers you. Small concerns on a sample are far easier to solve before production than after installation.

Structural and Safety Points to Confirm

A mockup shows appearance more than structure. Glass railings must be designed for the loads and height required for their location, and the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 sets the general framework for this. The exact values for your project are checked with our engineer, not guessed from a sample.

Please ask us to explain how the glass is fixed to the base, what type of glass is proposed and how the handrail connects. These points matter as much as the look.

From Approved Sample to Full Order

Once you approve the mockup, we record the details in a written specification: glass type and thickness, post spacing, fixing method, finish and any special requirements. This becomes the reference for production, so nothing is left to memory.

Production runs in our factory at Rival Street 37, followed by finishing and then installation. Any change after approval is easier to manage when the sample and specification agree.

When a Mockup Is Worth the Effort

A mockup makes most sense for large balconies, stairs with long runs, unusual glass shapes, or where the building committee or architect wants to see the design before agreeing. It is also worthwhile when the look must match an existing façade or interior.

For a small, simple railing with a familiar design, a detailed drawing and clear photos may be enough. We will advise honestly which route suits your project.

Frequently asked questions

Is a glass railing mockup always necessary?

No. It is most valuable for large or unusual projects, or when several people must agree on the look. For simple, familiar designs, a clear drawing and photos may be sufficient.

Can the mockup be installed on my balcony?

Often yes, where it is practical. We can discuss whether a temporary setup at your location or a sample at our workshop suits your situation best.

Does the mockup show the final safety performance?

It shows appearance and fixing details, but structural suitability is confirmed by our engineer against the relevant standard for your project.

What happens if I want changes after the mockup?

Changes are noted before production starts. We update the written specification so the approved sample and the final order match.

Common mistakes to avoid

Approving a glass railing based only on a showroom photo, or viewing the sample once in one light and at one angle, often leads to surprises. Test it at the real location, at different times of day, and from both inside and outside.

Our recommendation

Look at the mockup from seated height as well as standing, and check how the glass edge and fixings look close up. Confirm the final specification in writing before production begins.

Summary

A glass railing mockup lets you test design, sightlines and fixings with real materials before committing to a full order, reducing surprises and costly changes.
