How Profile Sightlines Are Planned for Steel-Look Windows

t446-11

A steel-look window sightline is the visible width of the frame and sash profiles as seen from inside a room, and it is planned during measurement, before any profile is ordered. Designers set the target sightline first, then confirm that the chosen Belgian steel-look profile system, glass build-up and opening configuration can achieve it structurally.

Why sightline is the first design decision

For minimalist interiors, the sightline often matters more than the window's overall size. A thin visible frame lets the glass read as one continuous plane, while a heavier frame draws the eye to the edges. Because the sightline is what the client sees every day, it should be agreed in writing before production starts.

Planning it early avoids surprises later, such as a sash that looks slimmer in a drawing than it does once glazed and installed.

On-site measurement and existing conditions

Our team measures the opening on site, checking the wall thickness, the reveal depth, the floor level and whether the wall is plumb. These readings determine how much room the frame has and how the window will sit within the wall.

  • Clear opening width and height at top, middle and bottom
  • Reveal depth and the finished wall surface
  • Sill condition and any existing tiling or stone
  • Photos of the surroundings for the drawing

Choosing the profile system and glass build-up

The sightline depends on the profile series, the number of sashes and the glass thickness. Belgian steel-look profiles are available in several depths, and a narrower visible face usually means a more careful choice of glazing and reinforcement. We review the options with the designer against the window size and wind exposure on the building.

Where a very slim line is required, we also check whether a fixed panel with a single opening sash gives a cleaner result than several operable leaves.

Drawing and written specification

Once the profile and glass are chosen, we produce a drawing that shows the sightline dimensions, the position of each sash and the joints at corners. The written specification lists the profile series, glass type, finish and hardware, so every party works from the same information.

The client approves the drawing before production. Any change after this point affects the material order and the schedule, so the approval step is important.

Production in the factory

Profiles are cut, assembled and glazed in our workshop at Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv. Accurate cutting and square assembly keep the joints tight, which is what makes a steel-look line appear sharp. Each unit is checked against the approved drawing before it leaves the factory.

Finishing is carried out as specified, and the final appearance is verified under daylight so the finish matches the designer's intent.

Installation and final check

On site, the units are fixed plumb and level, sealed and checked for smooth operation. We confirm that the visible sightlines match the approved drawing and that gaps at the perimeter are finished neatly. Any adjustments to hardware are made at this stage.

A final walk-through with the designer confirms that the result reads as intended in the room.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a steel look window sightline?

It is the visible width of the frame and sash profiles seen from inside the room. A narrower sightline gives the glass a more open, minimalist appearance.

Can I change the sightline after the drawing is approved?

Changes are possible but they affect the profile order, glass sizes and schedule. It is best to settle the sightline during the drawing stage.

Does a thinner sightline reduce performance?

It can limit the options for glass thickness and reinforcement, so the structural check is part of the planning. We review this with the designer before production.

Do you measure the site before quoting the design?

Yes, on-site measurement is the first step, followed by a drawing and written specification that the client approves before production.

Common mistakes to avoid

Designers often fix the sightline on the drawing without checking the reveal depth and wall condition on site. Confirming these early prevents a frame that looks correct on paper but does not fit the opening.

Our recommendation

Agree the target sightline in millimetres with the fabricator at the measurement stage, and ask for a drawing that shows it before production. Keep the same profile series across the project so the lines read consistently.

Summary

Sightlines for steel-look windows are planned from measurement through drawing, production and installation, with the designer approving the result before fabrication begins.
