How Steel Staircases Are Fabricated in Our Tel Aviv Workshop
t391-17

A steel staircase is fabricated in the workshop by first measuring the site and preparing a detailed drawing, then cutting and welding the steel stringers, treads and handrail supports to size. The finished parts are protected by galvanizing or powder coating and then delivered and installed on site. Every step is checked against the approved specification before the staircase leaves the factory.
Starting With an Accurate Site Measurement
Every steel staircase begins on site, not in the workshop. A technician measures the floor-to-floor height, the available run length, the width of the opening and the position of walls, landings and openings above. Small differences matter, because a staircase built to a few millimeters of error can be impossible to fit.
We also note the surface the stairs will land on, whether it is concrete, tile or an existing structure, since this affects how the base plates are anchored. The measurements become the foundation for everything that follows.
Drawing and Written Specification
Once the measurements are in hand, we prepare a drawing that shows stringer profiles, step spacing, landing details and connection points. A written specification accompanies it, listing materials, finishes and any special requirements such as handrails on one or both sides.
The client reviews and approves these documents before production starts. Changing a drawing at this stage costs far less time than correcting a finished part.
Cutting and Shaping the Steel
With the approved drawing, the steel profiles are cut to length and shaped in the factory. Stringers are often cut at an angle so the treads sit level, and notches are marked and cut for each step. Treads, whether solid plate or open grating, are prepared to the exact dimensions of the design.
- Measure and mark each profile from the drawing
- Cut lengths and angles with controlled tools
- Shape and notch the stringers for the treads
Welding and Assembly in the Workshop
The cut parts are assembled on a flat jig or table so that the stringers, supports and landings line up correctly. Skilled welders join the components, and the assembly is checked for squareness and alignment as the work progresses. Working on a jig helps keep the staircase straight and consistent from one step to the next.
Welds are cleaned and dressed so they are smooth and ready for finishing. Handrail posts and brackets are welded in position at this stage.
Surface Protection: Galvanizing and Powder Coating
Steel left unprotected will rust, especially outdoors or in humid conditions. Depending on the project, we apply hot-dip galvanizing, which coats the steel with a zinc layer that protects it from corrosion, or powder coating, which provides a durable colored finish. Surface preparation, including cleaning and removing any residue, is done before either process.
Choosing the right finish depends on the location of the staircase, whether indoors or in an exposed area, and the look the client wants.
Delivery, Installation and Final Check
Finished sections are packed and transported to the site, where the staircase is assembled and fixed in place. Base plates are anchored to the floor or structure, and the stringers are aligned and secured to the upper connection point. Handrails are then fitted and checked for stability.
A final inspection confirms that the staircase matches the approved drawing and that the step heights and handrail details are consistent. Exact safety values are checked with the engineer on the project.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fabricate a steel staircase?
Fabrication time depends on the design complexity, the finish required and the current production schedule. We confirm the timeline with you after the drawing is approved.
Can a steel staircase be made to fit an existing opening?
Yes, that is the main purpose of on-site measurement. We build the staircase to the actual dimensions of your opening rather than to standard sizes.
What is the difference between galvanizing and powder coating?
Galvanizing coats the steel with zinc for strong corrosion protection, while powder coating adds a durable colored finish. Both can suit different locations and design preferences.
Do I need to approve the drawing before production starts?
Yes, we always send a drawing and written specification for your approval. Production begins only after you have reviewed and confirmed the details.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is ordering a staircase before taking accurate site measurements, which can lead to parts that do not fit. Skipping the approved drawing stage also causes costly changes later.
Our recommendation
Have the measurements taken on site as close to the installation date as possible, and confirm the finish and handrail details in writing before production begins.
Summary
Steel staircases are fabricated through careful measuring, drawing, cutting, welding, surface protection and installation, each step checked against the approved specification.
