How to Measure a Door Opening for a New Iron or Aluminum Door

t418-0

t418-0

To measure a door opening for a new door, record the width at the top, middle and bottom, the height at both sides and the center, and the depth of the wall. Take every measurement twice, in millimeters, and check the swing direction before ordering a custom iron or aluminum door.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

A custom iron or aluminum door is made to fit your opening, not the other way around. Small errors can mean a frame that does not sit square, a gap at the threshold, or a door that rubs against the floor. Because the door is manufactured to measure, correct numbers at the start save time and avoid rework.

Measure the existing opening even if you are replacing an old door, since the original frame may have shifted over the years and may not be perfectly level or plumb.

Tools You Need

You do not need professional equipment, but a few tools make the job more reliable:

  • A steel measuring tape, preferably at least 5 meters long
  • A spirit level, to check that the frame is plumb and level
  • A pencil and notepad, or your phone to record and photograph each reading
  • A helper, useful for holding the tape across a wide opening

Step-by-Step Measurement

Start by measuring the width of the opening in three places: at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. Record the smallest value, since that is the one that limits the door. Next, measure the height on the left, in the center and on the right side. Again, note the smallest reading.

Finally, measure the wall depth, which is the thickness of the frame area where the door will sit. Write every number in millimeters and mark which measurement belongs to which location.

Check the Swing and Opening Direction

Before the drawing is finalized, decide how the door should open: inward or outward, to the left or to the right. Stand outside the entrance and look at the opening. The hinge side is the side the door will pivot on, and the direction determines where handles, locks and any stops will be placed.

Also note whether the door will be a single leaf or a double leaf, and whether there is a transom or side panel above or beside it that must be considered.

From Measurement to Production

After the on-site measurements, a drawing and written specification are prepared for your approval. Once you confirm, the door is produced in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv, with the frame and leaf cut and assembled to your exact dimensions. Iron elements can be hot-dip galvanized and powder coated for durability, while aluminum doors are manufactured to the chosen profile and finish.

Because the product is made to order, it is important to confirm all numbers before production begins, since changes later can delay the schedule.

Installation and Final Checks

On installation day, the frame is set plumb, level and square, then fixed securely to the wall. The door is hung, adjusted for even gaps around the edges and tested for smooth opening and closing. Seals and thresholds are fitted to keep out weather and noise.

Ask the installer to check the door through several open and close cycles and to confirm that locks and handles operate correctly before the work is considered complete.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the old door or the opening?

Measure the opening, meaning the space between the walls, rather than the old door. The opening is what the new frame must fit into, and it shows the real dimensions after any wear or settling.

Do I need to measure the wall depth?

Yes. Wall depth determines the frame size and how the door sits in the wall, so it is an important part of the measurement.

What if the opening is not square?

Many openings are slightly out of square. Record readings at several points, and the installer and engineer will decide how to adapt the frame during the drawing stage.

Can I measure in inches instead of millimeters?

You can, but millimeters are standard for manufacturing and reduce the risk of conversion errors. Write your units clearly on every note you send.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is measuring only once or using the old door instead of the opening. Forgetting to note the swing direction or the wall depth can also lead to a door that does not fit or open the right way.

Our recommendation

Measure at three points for width and height, use the smallest values, and send photos with your numbers so the drawing can be checked before production. Confirm the swing direction on the drawing before approving it.

Summary

Accurate measurements of width, height, depth and swing direction are the foundation of a well-fitting iron or aluminum door. Take your time, measure twice and confirm the drawing before production.
