How to Measure a Stainless Steel Railing for Your Balcony Accurately

t474-0

t474-0

To measure a stainless steel railing accurately, record the total run length along the balcony edge, the height from the finished floor to the top rail, and the position of every post and fixing point. Take each measurement at several spots, note any corners or uneven surfaces, and confirm the final dimensions with a professional before production begins.

Why accurate measurements matter

A stainless steel railing is made to measure, so every dimension you give us becomes part of the drawing and the production order. Small errors that look harmless on site, such as a few centimeters on the length or an assumed height that is actually different, can lead to a railing that does not fit the opening or does not align with the wall, the slab edge or the existing handrail.

Measuring carefully once saves time for you and for the installer, and it keeps the final result clean and well fitted.

Tools you need before you start

You do not need specialized equipment, but a few basic tools make the job much more reliable:

  • A steel tape measure, preferably 5 meters or longer
  • A spirit level or a long straight edge
  • A pencil and a notebook or your phone for photos
  • A helper to hold the tape at the far end

Work on a dry, clear surface and avoid measuring while the floor is still being finished.

Measure the length and the layout

Start by measuring the total run of the railing from the first fixing point to the last one. If the balcony has corners, measure each straight section separately and write down the angle or direction of each change. Measure the length at the top edge and again at the bottom edge, because walls and slabs are rarely perfectly parallel.

Mark where each post should sit, and note any obstacles such as drainpipes, air-conditioning units, electrical boxes or window frames that may affect placement.

Measure the height and the fixing surface

Measure the height from the finished floor level to the point where the top rail should sit. If tiles or a new screed will be added later, account for that thickness now. Check whether the fixing surface is concrete, brick, stone or an existing metal base, because this affects the type of fixing and the required depth.

Note the thickness of the wall or slab edge and the distance from the edge to the nearest structural element. Take photos of each side of the balcony with the tape visible in the frame.

Check the post spacing and existing elements

Mark the planned post positions along the run and measure the distance between them. Keep the spacing regular where possible and check that no post falls directly on a window opening or a joint that will be difficult to fix into. If you are replacing an old railing, measure the existing fixing points and compare them with the new layout.

  • Measure from a fixed reference point such as a corner
  • Record every measurement with its direction
  • Note any slope, step or uneven area

From measurement to production and installation

Once you send us your measurements and photos, we review them and may visit the site to confirm the details. The drawing and written specification are approved by you before anything goes into production. The railing is then manufactured in our factory on Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv, finished as agreed, and installed on site.

Final fixing details, including the required safety standards such as SI 1142, are checked with the engineer during this stage, so exact technical values are confirmed for your specific balcony rather than assumed from general rules.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the length from the wall or from the floor edge?

Measure along the top edge of the balcony where the railing will run, from one fixing point to the next. Measuring at the floor level and at the top can reveal differences that affect the final fit.

Do I need to measure the height twice?

Yes, it is wise to measure at least at two points along the run. Floors are not always level, so a single reading may not represent the whole balcony.

What if my balcony has a corner or a curve?

Measure each straight section separately and describe the angle or curve in your inquiry with photos. Curved or special sections are reviewed on site before production.

Can I send my measurements by WhatsApp?

Yes, you can send your measurements and photos by WhatsApp as a starting point. We will confirm the details, and a site measurement may be arranged before the final drawing is prepared.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common errors are measuring only once, forgetting to add the thickness of future floor finishes, and ignoring corners or uneven surfaces. Always write down the direction and location of every measurement.

Our recommendation

Take all measurements at least twice, use the same reference point each time, and send photos from several angles together with your figures so the drawing reflects the real conditions of your balcony.

Summary

Accurate measurements of length, height, post spacing and fixing surface are the foundation of a well fitted stainless steel railing. Recording them carefully and confirming them before production prevents costly corrections later.
