How to Measure a Steel-Look Window Opening Before Ordering

t442-2

t442-2

To measure a steel-look window opening, record the width and height at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest figure for each. Measure the depth of the wall reveal as well, and confirm every figure on site before ordering. Final sizes are always checked by our team during the on-site measurement.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

A steel-look profile window is made to measure, so the frame has to fit the opening exactly. A small error can mean gaps for water and air, or a frame that will not sit in the wall at all. Taking your time at this stage saves delays and rework later.

Before you start, clear the opening of old frames, loose plaster and debris. You need to see the true edges of the wall, not the old window or the filler around it.

Tools You Need

You do not need specialist equipment, but a few basic tools make the job much easier:

  • A steel measuring tape, preferably 5 metres or longer
  • A spirit level or long straight edge
  • A pencil and a notebook or printed sketch
  • A camera or phone to photograph each side of the opening

Measuring Width and Height

Measure the width at three points: the top, the middle and the bottom. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, so write down all three figures and use the smallest. Do the same for height, measuring on the left, centre and right.

Measure from one inside edge of the opening to the other, at the wall face where the frame will sit. Mark each measurement clearly on your sketch so nothing gets mixed up.

Measuring Depth and Wall Reveal

Depth tells us how far the frame can sit into the wall and how the window will line up with the outer and inner faces. Measure the wall thickness at the sill and at the head of the opening. Note whether there is a reveal, a recessed edge or a tiled surface that changes the visible size.

Also check whether the wall is plumb and the sill is level. If one side is noticeably out of square, note the difference rather than trying to correct it yourself.

Checking Your Figures and Taking Photos

Once you have your numbers, measure everything a second time, ideally with a different person reading the tape. Compare the results and resolve any differences before continuing.

Photograph each side of the opening from a few steps back, plus close-ups of the corners and sill. Photos help us understand the site and spot anything unusual, such as shutter boxes, pipes or uneven tiling.

Sending Your Measurements for an Order

Send your sketch, measurements and photos together. Include the room name or floor, the direction the window faces and whether it opens inward or outward, if you already know. Mention any existing frame type so we can plan removal correctly.

Remember that the final dimensions are confirmed on site. Our team will check your figures, then prepare a drawing and written specification for your approval before anything goes into production.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the outside or inside of the opening?

Measure the clear opening between the inside edges of the wall, at the face where the frame will sit. Note any reveal or tiling separately so it can be considered during planning.

What if the walls are not perfectly square?

This is very common. Record the width and height at several points and note the differences. Our team will assess the variation on site and advise on the right approach.

Can I order a window from my own measurements alone?

You can start with your own figures, but final sizes are confirmed by an on-site measurement before production. This protects you from errors that are hard to see from a photo.

Do I need to remove the old window first?

Not for measuring, but removing the old frame often reveals the true size of the opening. If you plan to remove it, do so carefully and measure afterwards.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring only once at one point and assuming the opening is uniform. Measuring over old filler or plaster instead of the true wall edge can also throw off the final size.

Our recommendation

Take each measurement at least three times and always work with the smallest width and height. Keep your sketch and photos together so the on-site check goes quickly.

Summary

Measure width and height at three points, record wall depth and reveal, and check everything twice. Send clear figures and photos, then confirm the final sizes on site before ordering.
