How to Measure Your Stairs for a Custom Handrail

t354-35

t354-35

To measure stairs for a handrail, record the total length of the staircase along the slope, the height of the rail above the nosing line on each side, and the position of wall brackets or posts. Take measurements at the top, middle and bottom, and confirm any figures with the manufacturer before ordering.

Decide Which Side and Which Rail You Need

Before you pick up a tape measure, decide where the handrail goes. Many staircases have a wall on one side and open space on the other, and some need a rail on both sides. Walk the staircase and note whether you want a continuous rail, a rail with a landing turn, or a short rail only at the bottom or top.

Write down the number of steps and whether the staircase is straight, L-shaped or curved. These details affect the shape of the rail and how many pieces the factory will need to produce.

Measure the Sloped Length of the Staircase

The handrail follows the slope, so measure along the line the rail will travel, not just the horizontal floor distance. Start at the point where the rail will end at the bottom and run the tape up to the top. If you have a landing, measure each flight separately and note the landing length.

  • Measure from the start point to the end point of each flight.
  • Record the total run and any landing sections.
  • Repeat the measurement to catch small errors.

Check the Height of the Rail

The rail height is taken from the front edge of the steps, called the nosing line, up to the top of the rail. Measure at several points because older stairs are not always uniform. Check that the height you plan will still meet the rule of thumb of comfortable grip for the people who will use it.

For the official safety requirements for railings in Israel, refer to the relevant standard SI 1142 and confirm the exact values with your engineer or the factory before finalising the design.

Mark the Wall Brackets and Posts

Note where the brackets or posts will sit. Measure the distance from the bottom step to the first bracket, and then the spacing between brackets. Check that the wall is solid at each fixing point, such as concrete or a sound block wall, and avoid hollow sections.

Take a photo showing the wall, the stair edge and your tape measure at the same time. Photos help the factory understand the site when they review your inquiry.

Note the Wall Thickness and Clearance

Measure the distance between the wall and the edge of the handrail where the grip will be. This gap, called clearance, should be comfortable for a hand to wrap around the rail. Also note any skirting, tiles or plaster that will change the final position of the brackets.

  • Measure from the wall to the centre of the planned rail.
  • Note any tiles or cladding added later.

Send Your Measurements and Photos

Once you have the figures, send them with clear photos of each staircase section. Include the number of steps, the sloped length, rail height, bracket positions and any landings. A written list with simple sketches is very helpful.

The factory will review your details and may come on site to measure before producing the rail. This confirms the dimensions and avoids costly errors, so do not cut or fix anything until the final drawing is approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I measure the handrail along the wall or along the stairs?

Measure along the slope of the stairs, because the handrail follows the angle of the steps. A horizontal measurement will be too short for a sloped rail.

Should I measure both sides of the staircase?

Yes, if you plan a rail on both sides, measure each side separately. Sides can differ in wall position, clearance and bracket spacing.

Can I measure a handrail myself without an engineer?

You can take accurate site measurements yourself. Confirm the safety details, such as height and fixing method, with the factory or an engineer before production.

What if my stairs have a landing?

Measure each flight and the landing separately, and note the angle or turn where the rail changes direction. Send a simple sketch so the factory can match the sections correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measuring only the horizontal distance and forgetting the slope is the most common error, and it leads to a rail that is too short. Also avoid fixing brackets into hollow or damaged walls without checking the wall first.

Our recommendation

Measure at least twice, write every figure on a sketch, and send clear photos with your inquiry. Let the factory confirm the final dimensions on site before any metal is cut.

Summary

Measure the sloped length, rail height, wall clearance and bracket positions on each flight, then send accurate figures and photos. Careful measurement is the simplest way to get a custom handrail that fits the first time.
