Measuring Your Driveway Before Ordering an Electric Gate

t280-3

t280-3

To measure a driveway for a gate, record the clear opening width between the posts or walls, the ground slope and surface, and the space needed for the gate to open or slide. Send these measurements with photos, and our team will verify everything on site before production starts.

Why accurate measurement matters

An electric gate is built to fit one exact opening. A gap of even a few centimeters can change the gate design, the motor choice and the way the leaf moves. Careful measurement at the start prevents delays and reduces the need for changes later.

Measurements also tell us what kind of gate suits your driveway. Some spaces favor a sliding gate, while others work better with a swing gate that opens inward or outward. Good numbers make that choice clear before any drawing is made.

Measure the opening

Start by measuring the clear opening from the inside face of one post or wall to the inside face of the other. Measure at the top, middle and bottom, because walls are not always perfectly parallel. Write down the smallest figure and mention which point it came from.

  • Clear width at top, middle and bottom
  • Height from the ground to the top of the post
  • Thickness of the posts or pillars

Check the ground and slope

The gate needs a level, stable base. Note whether the driveway slopes toward the street, rises toward the house, or has a dip near the opening. Slope affects the rail for a sliding gate and the clearance for a swing gate.

Also record the surface type, such as concrete, paving stones or asphalt. Mention any existing drainage channel, cable, pipe or utility box near the posts, since these may need to be planned around during installation.

Allow space for movement

A sliding gate needs free space on one side equal to at least the length of the leaf, so it can travel fully open. Check for trees, walls, parked cars or a slope that could block the path. A swing gate needs clearance on the side it opens toward, and that space must be free of obstacles.

Measure the space you can actually use, not the space you hope to have. If a fence or hedge will be added later, include its future position in your notes.

Note power and access

An electric gate needs a power supply and sometimes a connection for an intercom or remote system. Mark where the nearest electrical point is and how far it is from the gate posts. Tell us if you prefer the motor and controls on a particular side.

Consider how the gate will be used every day. Note whether vehicles enter from a street with traffic, whether you need a pedestrian gate beside it, and whether the gate should stop automatically when it meets an obstacle.

What to send us

To begin, send us a short written list of the measurements, along with clear photos of the opening from the street and from inside the property. Include a rough sketch if that helps, showing the posts, slope and the free space around the gate.

  • Clear opening width and height
  • Photos from both sides
  • Ground slope and surface type
  • Power point location
  • Preferred gate type and opening direction

Our team will then visit to measure on site, confirm the details and prepare a written specification for your approval before production.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to measure the driveway or only the gate opening?

Measure both. The opening decides the gate size, while the space beside or in front of it decides whether a sliding or swing gate will move freely.

Should I measure from the outside or the inside of the posts?

Measure between the inside faces of the posts or walls, since that is the space the gate must fill. Note the post thickness separately.

What if my driveway slopes?

Tell us the direction and roughly how steep the slope is. We will check the level on site and plan the rail or hinge arrangement accordingly.

Do I need to be home for the site visit?

It helps if someone can show us the opening, the power point and any access restrictions, so the measurements can be confirmed together.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measuring only once or from one point is a common error, since walls can narrow or shift. Forgetting the free space needed for the gate to open or slide can also force a redesign.

Our recommendation

Take each measurement at three heights and write down the smallest value, then photograph the area from several angles. Send these details before the site visit so we can plan the gate with fewer surprises.

Summary

Accurate driveway measurements, clear photos and notes on slope and power make the gate process faster and more precise. Our team confirms everything on site before anything is built.
