Metal Finish Sample Board: Approve Finishes Before Production

t495-45

t495-45

A metal finish sample board is a small physical panel that shows the exact colour, texture and coating of the material you plan to use. A mock-up goes a step further by showing a real section of the element at scale, so you can judge the finish in context before full production begins.

What a Metal Finish Sample Board Shows

A metal finish sample board is a flat piece of the same material and coating used in the final work, typically a few centimetres in size. It lets you see colour, gloss level, grain and surface feel under real light rather than on a screen. Because powder coating and galvanizing can vary slightly from batch to batch, a physical sample is far more reliable than a catalogue image.

Boards are most useful when you hold two or three options side by side and compare them against the stone, wood or plaster that will surround the metalwork on the building.

When a Full Mock-Up Is Worth Making

A mock-up is a short real section of the element, such as a piece of railing, a window frame corner or a gate leaf, made to the intended profile and finish. It is worth the effort when the design depends on a specific profile, when the finish will be seen up close, or when the project includes several materials meeting at one joint.

  • Joints and corners where two finishes meet
  • Profile depth and how light falls on it
  • Fixing details that will be visible

How the Approval Process Works With Us

We start from your drawings and a written specification. Once the design is clear, we prepare sample boards in the finishes you are considering and, where useful, a mock-up of a representative detail. You review them on site or at the factory and confirm the choice in writing before any production starts.

This sequence means that finish decisions are made once, early, and the full order is produced to the approved sample rather than to an assumption.

Choosing Finishes for Israeli Conditions

Coastal air, strong sun and rain all affect how metal ages, so the approved finish should be judged with its outdoor performance in mind. Hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating is a common choice for exterior elements because it combines corrosion protection with a wide colour range. Stainless steel and aluminum offer a different look and are often chosen for a clean, modern facade.

Ask for samples that have been exposed to the same conditions as the finished work where possible, and compare how colours shift between morning and evening light.

Checking the Sample Against the Drawing

When you review a sample, check three things: the colour and gloss under daylight, the texture and whether it matches the intended smoothness or grain, and the edge condition where coating meets the corner. Note the approved sample reference on your drawing so the contractor and the fabricator work from the same standard.

  • Record the approved finish name or code
  • Keep one sample for site reference
  • Mark any dimensional tolerances that matter

Turning the Approved Sample Into Production

Once the sample is signed off, the factory produces the work to that standard. Any change to finish after approval can affect schedule and fit, so decisions should be closed before production begins. Keeping the approved board with the project file protects you if questions come up during installation or at handover.

If your design needs a finish we do not normally stock, let us know early so we can source a sample and confirm its appearance before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sample board enough, or do I always need a mock-up?

A sample board is enough for colour and texture on simple elements. A mock-up is recommended when the profile, joints or fixing details are important to the design.

How long should I keep an approved sample?

Keep it for the life of the project, including installation and handover. It is the reference if colour or finish is questioned later.

Will the final finish match the sample exactly?

We aim for close consistency, but coating and light conditions can cause slight variation. Reviewing the sample in daylight and agreeing on acceptable tolerance avoids surprises.

Can I request samples for stainless steel or aluminum too?

Yes. Samples can be prepared for stainless steel, aluminum and galvanized and powder-coated iron so you can compare them before choosing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Approving a finish from a screen image or a single small swatch viewed indoors is a common mistake. Judge the finish in daylight, next to the materials it will meet, and confirm the decision in writing.

Our recommendation

Compare at least two options side by side in the actual site light, and make a mock-up of any joint where two finishes meet. Attach the approved sample reference to your drawing before production starts.

Summary

A metal finish sample board and mock-up let architects confirm colour, texture and coating before full production, reducing costly changes later.
