Ordering Custom Balcony Railings: Drawings and Specifications

t312-49

t312-49

A custom balcony railing order starts with photos and measurements taken on site, followed by a drawing and a written specification that describe the design, materials and finish. Approving these documents before production protects you from surprises on height, spacing and fit. Clear drawings make the order faster and more accurate.

Start with photos and a clear description

The first step is an inquiry with photos of the balcony and the building facade. Show the full balcony, the side walls, and any existing railing you want to replace. Mention the style you have in mind, whether it is vertical bars, a glass panel, or a mix of materials.

Photos help the fabricator understand the context quickly. They also reveal details such as wall type, slab edges and nearby architectural elements that affect how the railing is fixed.

On-site measurement comes before drawing

A railing can only be drawn accurately after someone measures the balcony on site. Measurements cover the length of each run, the height from the floor, corner angles, and the position of anchor points. Walls are rarely perfectly straight or level, so measuring in several places matters.

  • Length of each balcony side and return
  • Height from finished floor to top of railing
  • Anchor type: slab edge, wall or floor
  • Obstacles such as drains, pipes or AC units

What the drawing should show

The drawing turns the measurements into a plan you can check. It should show the layout from above and an elevation view of the infill pattern. Dimensions, post positions, and the direction of the gate or any opening should be marked clearly.

Ask for the drawing to note where each piece is fixed, so you know exactly what will be attached to the concrete and what will rest on the floor.

The written specification

Alongside the drawing, a written specification lists the materials, profile sizes, infill type, coating and installation method. It removes guesswork about what is included in the order. A good specification also states the finish, for example hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating, and the colour reference.

Check that the document mentions the handrail type and any glass or safety infill. Israeli railing requirements are described in standard SI 1142; for exact values, confirm with your engineer.

Approval before production

Review the drawing and specification carefully before approving them. Check heights, spacing between bars, and how the railing meets the wall or slab. Confirm the colour and finish in writing. Once you approve, production begins in the factory, so changes at this stage are far easier than after fabrication.

If anything is unclear, ask questions now. A short review call often prevents a costly rework later.

From factory to installation

After approval the railing is cut, welded and assembled in the workshop, then finished through galvanizing and powder coating where specified. Installation follows, with the pieces fixed to the balcony structure as drawn. Because most of the work is done in the factory, site time is usually short and the result matches the approved drawing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home for the measurement?

Yes, it is best to be present or to have someone who can give access to the balcony. The measurer can then confirm details with you directly.

Can I send my own sketch instead of a professional drawing?

You can, and a rough sketch with dimensions helps a lot. The fabricator will still verify it on site and prepare a proper drawing for approval.

Who checks the railing height and safety?

Height and safety requirements should be confirmed with your engineer or building committee. Israeli standard SI 1142 covers railings in general.

What if the wall is not straight?

Uneven walls are common. The measurement and drawing should capture the actual conditions so the railing can be adjusted to fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Approving a drawing without checking heights, post positions and anchor points is the most common error. Skipping the written specification can also leave the finish and fixing method open to misunderstanding.

Our recommendation

Measure each side twice, mark obstacles on your photos, and do not approve any drawing until the height, infill spacing and finish are written down in the specification.

Summary

A custom balcony railing order works best with photos, an accurate on-site measurement, a clear drawing and a written specification approved before production.
