Perforated Metal Panels as Balcony Railing Infill
t316-22

Perforated metal panels are a practical infill for balcony railings that keep the view open while blocking part of the sun, wind and direct sightlines. The pattern, hole size and open-area percentage decide how much light passes through and how private the balcony feels. Each panel is cut and finished to measure in our Tel Aviv factory for a clean, consistent look.
What perforated metal infill is
Perforated metal infill is a sheet of steel or aluminum with a pattern of holes punched across its surface. Instead of solid railing or open bars, the panel sits between the posts and creates a surface that is partly solid and partly open. The result is a railing that looks lighter than a solid wall but offers more privacy and shade than simple vertical bars.
The panel is usually framed by the railing structure, so the perforated sheet can be inserted into a rectangular or sloped frame with the same finish as the rest of the balcony metalwork.
Partial visibility and shade
The main reason designers choose perforated panels is controlled visibility. The holes let the eye see through the railing, so the view to the street or the garden remains part of the room. At the same time, the solid portion of the sheet blocks direct sightlines from neighbors and passersby.
Shade works the same way. Sunlight is filtered into a pattern of spots and lines, reducing glare and heat on the balcony floor without making the space dark. Smaller holes and a lower open-area percentage give more shade, while larger holes give more light and a freer view.
Choosing the pattern and open area
Pattern choice affects both the look and the performance. Round holes, square holes, slots and decorative motifs all read differently from the street and from inside the apartment. The open-area percentage, meaning the share of the sheet that is empty, is the most useful number to discuss with the designer.
- Lower open area: more privacy and shade, less view
- Higher open area: more light and airflow, more visibility
- Repeating geometric patterns suit modern facades
- Irregular or organic patterns suit softer, residential designs
Wind, safety and structure
A perforated panel is still a surface, so it catches wind. Its open area reduces the load compared with a solid sheet, but the frame, fixings and posts must still be designed for the exposure of the site. Balconies on high floors or facing open directions need particular attention.
Railing height and load requirements follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, and the exact values are checked with the structural engineer for each project. We build the infill and frame to the approved specification rather than guessing the loads on site.
Materials and finishes
Perforated infill is commonly made from galvanized steel or aluminum. Both can be finished with powder coating in the colors the designer selects, and hot-dip galvanizing is often specified for steel exposed to weather. The finish matters on a balcony because the panel faces sun, rain and salty air near the coast.
Aluminum is lighter and does not rust, while steel offers a heavier, more solid feel and suits bold industrial designs. The choice depends on the look, the loads and the maintenance the client is willing to accept.
How we make it for your balcony
The process starts with an inquiry and photos of the balcony. We then measure on site, prepare a drawing and a written specification covering the pattern, open area, frame and finish, and wait for the client's approval. Only after approval does production begin in our factory at 37 Rival Street in Tel Aviv.
Once the panels and frames are finished, we install them on site. Working in the factory keeps the cutting and welding precise, which helps the perforated sheet sit flush and line up with the rest of the railing.
Frequently asked questions
Does a perforated panel block the view completely?
No. The open holes let you keep a visual connection to the outside, and the open-area percentage controls how much you see. A lower open area gives more privacy, while a higher one keeps the view more open.
Is perforated infill good for shade on a balcony?
Yes, it filters sunlight into a pattern rather than blocking it entirely. This reduces glare and heat on the balcony while keeping the space bright.
Can the pattern be customized?
Yes. Hole shape, size, spacing and pattern can be chosen to suit the design, and the panel is cut to the measured dimensions of your balcony.
How is the railing structure checked?
The frame and fixings are designed for the site exposure and checked against the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 with the structural engineer. Exact values are confirmed per project.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a pattern only for its appearance without checking the open area and wind exposure is a common error. Ignoring the finish for the coastal or exposed environment can also shorten the life of the railing.
Our recommendation
Decide the privacy and shade you need first, then select the open-area percentage before picking the pattern. Ask the engineer to confirm the frame and fixings for the wind exposure of your specific balcony.
Summary
Perforated metal panels give balcony railings a balance of partial visibility, shade and a clean modern look when the pattern, open area and frame are chosen for the site.
