Powder Coating Workflow for Aluminum Architectural Parts

t502-18

t502-18

Powder coating aluminum is a multi-step process: the part is cleaned and pretreated, the electrostatic powder is applied, and it is cured in an oven so the finish bonds to the metal. For architectural parts, the color and gloss are chosen early, because they affect the surface preparation and the final look on site.

Start with color and finish selection

For architectural work, the color decision comes first. Designers usually choose from a standard RAL or a sample board, but the gloss level, texture and the way a color looks in daylight all matter. A matte finish hides fingerprints and small surface marks better than a high gloss, which shows every imperfection.

Send us the color reference together with the drawings, and we will confirm which powder options match it before production starts. Sample pieces are the most reliable way to check the final result on the actual aluminum.

Measurement and drawings

Accurate measurement is the foundation of every project. We measure on site, check the openings and confirm how each aluminum part will connect to the surrounding structure. Dimensions are recorded in the written specification, including profile type, sizes and fixing points.

Because coating adds a thin layer to the surface, we account for finish thickness in the drawings so that moving parts, joints and glazing still fit as designed.

Pretreatment before coating

Powder adheres only to a clean and properly prepared surface. Aluminum parts go through degreasing, rinsing and a chemical pretreatment that improves adhesion and corrosion resistance. Skipping or rushing this stage is the most common reason coatings later peel or blister.

  • Degreasing to remove oils from handling and cutting
  • Rinsing between stages to prevent residue
  • Conversion treatment that prepares the metal surface
  • Drying before the powder is applied

Electrostatic application and curing

Powder is applied electrostatically, so particles are attracted to the grounded aluminum and wrap around edges evenly. The coated part then enters a curing oven, where the powder melts and cross-links into a continuous, hard film. Oven temperature and time follow the powder manufacturer's technical data sheet.

We check the finish visually for color match, gloss and coverage. Edges, corners and hidden faces receive the same attention as visible surfaces.

Handling, packing and quality checks

Coated parts are cooled, inspected and packed with protective film or padding. Because powder finishes can scratch if they rub together, each piece is separated during transport and storage. Parts are checked against the approved sample and the specification before leaving the factory.

Designers can request a sample or a checkpoint inspection for larger orders, which helps catch any color or texture differences early.

Installation and final care

On site, we handle coated aluminum with clean gloves and soft straps, and we avoid dragging parts over masonry or tools. Fixings are chosen to suit the aluminum and the wall type, and any site cuts or drilled holes are sealed to protect the finish.

Simple care after installation extends the life of the coating: rinse with water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner, and avoid harsh solvents or steel wool.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose any color for powder coated aluminum?

Most standard RAL and sample-board colors are available, though some shades and textures depend on the powder range. We confirm availability and the closest match before production begins.

Does the coating thickness affect the dimensions?

Yes, a powder layer adds a small amount to the surface, so we account for it in the drawings. This keeps moving parts, joints and glazing fitting correctly.

Why is pretreatment so important?

Powder bonds to the metal through a clean, prepared surface. Good pretreatment is what keeps the finish from peeling or blistering over time.

Can coated aluminum be touched up on site?

Minor scratches can be touched up, but the color match is never perfect. For that reason we recommend careful handling during transport and installation.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing a high-gloss finish without considering how it will show marks and handling. Specifying colors from a screen instead of a physical sample, which can produce noticeable differences.

Our recommendation

Order a physical sample of the chosen color and finish on the same aluminum profile, and review it in the actual light of the installation location before approving the full order.

Summary

Powder coating aluminum works best when color, measurement, pretreatment and curing are planned together from the start.
