Request a Safety Assessment for Your Existing Handrails

t361-43

t361-43

A handrail safety assessment is an on-site inspection of your existing railings to check their structure, fixings, height, gaps and corrosion. Techno Kol Uzi inspects the railing in person, explains what is safe and what needs work, and provides a written specification for any repair or replacement.

What a Handrail Safety Assessment Covers

A handrail safety assessment is a practical inspection of railings that are already installed on a balcony, staircase, terrace or entrance. Our technician looks at the whole structure rather than a single spot, so you understand the real condition of the railing before deciding on any work.

  • Fixings to the wall, floor or slab, and any signs of loosening
  • Corrosion, cracks or weld failures in the metal
  • Overall height and the spacing between bars or infill
  • Condition of the finish and coating

The result is a clear picture of what is sound and what needs attention.

When You Should Request an Assessment

Many property owners ask for an inspection after noticing a change in the railing. You do not need to wait for a visible failure to call us. Early checks are usually simpler and less costly than emergency repairs.

  • A railing that moves or feels loose when leaned on
  • Rust bubbling through paint, or flaking on older steel
  • A railing installed years ago, with no record of its original specification
  • Renovation of a building, balcony or staircase
  • A request from a building committee, contractor or insurer

How the On-Site Inspection Works

The process begins with your inquiry, where you can send photos of the railing and describe where it is located. We then arrange a visit to measure and examine the railing in place. Measuring on site matters, because the height, spacing and anchor points are what determine whether a railing performs as intended.

During the visit we note the condition of each section and take the measurements needed for a written report. We do not rely only on photographs.

What You Receive After the Assessment

After the visit you receive a written summary of the railing's condition, with findings organized by section. The report separates items that are fine from items that need repair, reinforcement or full replacement, so you can decide with clear information.

If work is needed, we provide a written specification and drawing for your approval before anything is produced. Nothing is manufactured until you have approved the specification.

Standards and Checking Against Requirements

Railings in Israel are assessed against the relevant national standard for railings, SI 1142, which sets out general requirements for safe guarding at edges and drops. The standard covers aspects such as height, structural strength and openings that a child could pass through.

We do not quote exact figures from memory during the inspection. Where a measurement matters for compliance, the specific values are checked with the engineer and documented in your report, so you are not relying on a rough estimate.

Repair or Replacement After the Inspection

Not every railing needs replacing. Sometimes a loose fixing can be reinforced, or a corroded section can be cut out and rebuilt. In other cases the railing is too deteriorated, and a new one made to measure is the safer and more economical option over time.

Once you have the report, you can choose the approach that suits your building, your budget and your timeline. We can then produce new work in our factory, finished by hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, and install it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a handrail safety assessment only for old railings?

No. Railings of any age can benefit from an inspection, especially after a renovation, a change of use or when something feels loose. Newer railings are also checked for correct installation.

Do I need to be present during the inspection?

It is helpful if you or a representative of the building can be present, so the technician can access the balcony, stair or entrance. We will confirm the best time with you when arranging the visit.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. You receive a written summary of the condition, the measurements taken and the recommended next steps. Any proposed work is described in a specification you approve before production.

How do I start a request?

Send us photos of the railing and tell us its location and approximate age. We will respond to arrange an on-site measurement at 37 Rival Street area visits as scheduled.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is waiting for visible damage before checking a railing, since loosened fixings and hidden corrosion often appear first. Another is assuming an old railing still meets current requirements without anyone measuring it.

Our recommendation

Inspect your railings at least once a year, and check every fixing by hand for movement after any renovation or storm. When in doubt, request a measured assessment rather than relying on appearance alone.

Summary

A handrail safety assessment gives you a measured, written picture of your existing railings and a clear route to repair or replacement. Request one from Techno Kol Uzi before a small issue becomes a larger problem.
