Site Preparation Before Installing Stainless Steel Cladding Panels

t474-27

t474-27

Good stainless steel cladding starts with a surface that is flat, dry, structurally sound and accurately measured before any panel is ordered. Clear coordination on fixing points, access and sequence between the contractor and the metalwork factory prevents most delays and fitting problems.

Check the Structure and Substrate First

Before anything is measured, the contractor should confirm that the wall or frame behind the cladding is structurally sound, dry and clean. Loose plaster, old coatings, debris and moisture can all affect how fixings hold and how the panels sit.

  • Confirm the substrate is solid enough for the planned fixings
  • Note any areas with moisture, cracks or uneven surfaces
  • Mark where services such as pipes, cables and drainage run behind the wall

Anything found at this stage is far cheaper to fix now than after panels are produced.

Establish Levels, Lines and Tolerances

Cladding only looks right when the reference lines are right. Set out the grid, reveals and joint positions on the building before fabrication starts, and check the surface for flatness with a straightedge or laser level.

Discuss with the engineer which tolerances apply to the substrate and to the finished panels. Exact values depend on the project and should be confirmed with the engineer rather than assumed.

Measure On Site Before Production

Final measurements should be taken on site, not from drawings alone, because building openings are rarely exactly as designed. Record each opening and panel zone with its width, height and any out-of-square corners.

Photos with dimensions written on them help the workshop understand the setting. Measure again if the structure has been altered since the first survey.

Plan Fixings, Access and Sequence

Decide how each panel will be fixed and where the fixing points fall on the substrate. Plan the installation sequence so that panels can be lifted, positioned and secured safely, and confirm that scaffolding or lifting equipment can reach every area.

Agree on who provides the fixings and sub-frame, and make sure drawings show all fixing positions clearly. Clear responsibilities reduce disputes on site.

Production and Finishing in the Workshop

Once measurements and drawings are approved in writing, the panels are fabricated in our factory from stainless steel to the agreed specification. Cutting, forming, joining and edge finishing are carried out to the measured dimensions.

Surface finish is chosen at the approval stage, because the appearance and cleaning needs of stainless steel depend on it. Protective film is applied where needed to protect panels during transport and handling.

Delivery, Handling and Installation

Panels should be stored flat, kept clean and dry, and handled with protective gloves and soft supports to avoid scratches. Check every panel against the drawing when it arrives on site and keep any packaging until the panel is fixed.

  • Inspect panels for transport damage on delivery
  • Install in the agreed sequence, checking alignment as you go
  • Protect installed panels from construction dust and debris

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to measure the site again if drawings already exist?

Yes, in most cases. Building openings often differ slightly from drawings, so on-site measurements are needed before production starts.

What should a contractor check on the wall before cladding?

Check that the substrate is solid, dry and reasonably flat, and that fixing points and hidden services are identified. Problems found early are much easier to correct.

Who decides the fixing method for stainless steel cladding?

The fixing method is agreed between the contractor, the engineer and the metalwork supplier based on the structure and the panel size. Confirm exact requirements with the engineer.

How should stainless steel panels be protected on site?

Store them flat and dry, handle them with gloves and soft supports, and keep protective film in place until installation and cleaning are complete.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering panels from drawings without on-site measurement, and leaving the fixing plan until the panels arrive, are the two most common causes of delays and poor fit. Both are avoided by agreeing measurements and fixings in writing before production.

Our recommendation

Take photos with dimensions and agree the drawing, finish and fixing details in writing before any production starts. A short site walk with the workshop, the engineer and the contractor together usually saves weeks later.

Summary

Prepare the substrate, verify levels, measure on site, plan fixings and access, and approve drawings before production. This sequence gives accurate stainless steel cladding that fits the first time.
