Steel Staircase Fabrication Process: From Drawing to Installation

t378-29

t378-29

The steel staircase fabrication process starts with an inquiry and on-site measurement, moves to a written drawing and specification that the client approves, then continues with cutting and welding in the factory and a protective finish. The staircase is installed on site last, after the structure has been checked against the building.

Step 1: Inquiry and Photos

Every project begins with a simple inquiry. Send photos of the space, the floor levels you need to connect, and any sketch or idea you already have. Tell us how the staircase will be used, whether it is inside a home, in a common area of a building, or outdoors, because this affects the material and finish.

At this stage we are only confirming that the idea is workable. Nothing is cut or ordered until the measurements and the drawing are in place.

Step 2: On-Site Measurement

A member of our team visits the site to measure the floor-to-floor height, the available run length, the opening in the slab, and the wall or column where the staircase will be anchored. Measurements are taken more than once, because finished floors, screed, and tiles change the real height.

  • Total rise between the two floor levels
  • Available width and clearance at the head and foot
  • Anchor points and their condition
  • Access route for bringing the finished parts in

Step 3: Drawing and Written Specification

Based on the measurements, we prepare a drawing that shows the stringers, treads, risers, handrail, and connections. The written specification lists the steel profiles, the thickness of each part, the type of tread, the handrail design, and the finish. You review both documents before anything goes into production.

Standard dimensions for risers and treads are checked against the Israeli standards with the engineer on your project, so the staircase is comfortable and safe to use.

Step 4: Client Approval

We do not start production until you have approved the drawing and specification in writing. Read them carefully and ask about anything that is unclear. Changes are much easier to make on paper than after the steel is cut.

If a structural engineer or the building committee needs to sign off, we can provide the documents in the format they require.

Step 5: Factory Production and Finishing

In our workshop at Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv, the profiles are cut to length, drilled, and welded into the stringers and landings. Treads are cut and fitted, and every joint is ground smooth. Once the structure is complete, it receives its protective finish, usually hot-dip galvanizing for outdoor or humid environments, or powder coating for a chosen color.

Parts are assembled in the factory where possible, so that site work stays short and clean.

Step 6: Installation on Site

The staircase is delivered and installed by our team. The anchor points are prepared, the stringers are set level and plumb, and the structure is fixed firmly to the floor or wall. We then fit the treads and handrail, and check the whole staircase for alignment, stability, and smooth movement underfoot before we leave.

A final inspection with you completes the job, and we will note any small adjustment that is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the steel staircase fabrication process take?

The time depends on the complexity of the staircase, the finish you choose, and how quickly the drawing is approved. We will give you an estimate of the schedule once the measurements and specification are complete.

Do I need to be home during the on-site measurement?

It helps if someone can open the space and point out the anchor points and access route. If you cannot be present, you can arrange access with the building manager or a representative.

Can the staircase be made to fit an existing opening?

Yes, that is the purpose of the on-site measurement. The drawing is made to the real dimensions of your opening and floor levels, not to a standard size.

Is galvanizing or powder coating better for a steel staircase?

Hot-dip galvanizing gives strong protection against weather and humidity, which suits outdoor and exposed areas. Powder coating offers a wide choice of colors and works well for interior and sheltered staircases. We recommend the finish after we know where the staircase will stand.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is approving a drawing without checking the real floor heights and finishes, which leads to an uneven rise. Another is choosing the finish without considering the environment where the staircase will be used.

Our recommendation

Measure the floor-to-floor height after the final floor finishes are laid, not before, and share those figures with the fabricator. Ask for the written specification to be reviewed together with the drawing before you approve it.

Summary

The steel staircase fabrication process runs from inquiry and measurement through drawing, approval, factory production, finishing, and installation. Careful measurement and a clear approved specification are what make the final staircase fit and perform well.
