Vehicle Loop Detector for Automatic Gate Opening: Installation Guide

t288-40

t288-40

A vehicle loop detector is a buried wire loop that senses the metal mass of an approaching car and sends a signal to the gate operator to open. For reliable automatic opening, the loop must be cut to the correct size, placed at a safe distance from the gate, and wired with twisted cable away from power lines.

How a Loop Detector Works

A loop detector is an inductive sensor. A loop of insulated wire is buried in the driveway and connected to a detector unit in the gate controller or a separate module. The unit sends a small current through the loop, creating a magnetic field. When a vehicle's metal body enters the field, the inductance changes and the detector reports presence.

Because it reacts to metal mass rather than movement, the loop holds a call while the car stays over it, which prevents the gate from closing on a vehicle waiting in front of it.

Planning the Loop Position

The loop should sit where the driver stops or passes before the gate starts moving. Measure the gate travel time and the braking distance of a typical car, then place the loop far enough out that the gate is fully open before the vehicle reaches it.

  • Keep the loop clear of the gate's own metal frame and rails.
  • Check the site for nearby metal, such as reinforcement in a slab, that may cause false calls.
  • Confirm the exact loop dimensions and sensitivity with the gate manufacturer's manual and the engineer.

Cutting the Slot and Laying the Wire

Mark the loop outline and cut a shallow slot in the asphalt or concrete with a masonry saw. Clean out dust and debris, then lay the wire in the slot, keeping the turns evenly spaced. Use the number of turns specified by the detector manufacturer, since this sets the inductance the unit expects.

Keep a short length of loose wire at the edge for connection. Do not cut or splice the loop wire itself.

Feeder Cable and Twisting

Run the feeder cable from the loop to the detector in a separate conduit, away from power cables. Twist the two leads of the loop tail together, usually around 20 turns per metre, to reduce interference and make the signal stable. Twisting is important, especially over longer runs.

Seal the slot with a suitable sealant once the wire is secured, so water cannot reach the wire.

Setting Sensitivity and Testing

After powering the detector, check that the loop frequency is stable with no vehicle present. Then drive over the loop with a car and confirm the output relay activates and the gate opens. Test with several vehicle types, since a low-profile car or a vehicle with a plastic body may produce a weaker signal.

  • Test the presence hold so the gate stays open while the car is parked over the loop.
  • Test the safety loop separately if the installation includes one.

Safety and Finishing

An automatic gate must be safe for people and vehicles as well as reliable. Make sure any safety sensors, photocells and stop functions work with the loop, and that the gate does not close onto a vehicle or person in its path. The Israeli railing standard SI 1142 is a general reference for safe metalwork; exact values for gate clearances and loads should be checked with the engineer.

Once testing is complete, hand over the setup to the client with a short explanation of how the loop works and what to avoid, such as digging near the wire.

Frequently asked questions

How far from the gate should the loop be placed?

Place the loop far enough out that the gate is fully open before the vehicle reaches it, based on the gate speed and typical braking distance. The exact distance depends on the gate and should be confirmed with the manufacturer and the engineer.

Why does the gate sometimes open for no reason?

False calls often come from metal nearby, a loop that is too sensitive, or unstable wiring. Check the feeder cable twisting, move the loop away from metal, and adjust sensitivity.

Can a loop be used without a photocell?

A loop controls opening, but it is not a substitute for safety devices. Photocells or safety loops should be fitted so the gate does not close onto people or vehicles.

What is the most common installation error?

Running the feeder cable alongside power cables and skipping the twisting. This causes interference and erratic detection, which is hard to diagnose after the slot is sealed.

Common mistakes to avoid

Cutting or splicing the loop wire and placing the loop too close to the gate so it opens too late. Also avoid running feeder cable next to power lines without twisting it.

Our recommendation

Test the loop with several real vehicles before sealing the slot, and record the placement and turn count so future repairs are straightforward. Always check the final setup against the manufacturer's manual and the engineer's requirements.

Summary

A correctly sized, correctly placed and properly wired loop gives reliable automatic gate opening. Careful testing and clear handover to the client prevent most problems.
