What Width of Opening Does an Electric Sliding Gate Need?

t282-2

t282-2

An electric sliding gate needs an opening slightly narrower than its total length, because the gate panel must slide sideways beyond the opening to clear it. The exact figures depend on the gate design, the track, and the space left on the side where the gate travels, so the opening must be measured on site before the gate is designed.

Why the Gate Must Be Longer Than the Opening

A sliding gate moves along a track beside the entrance, so it has to overlap the opening when closed and move clear of it when open. This means the gate panel is designed to be a little longer than the clear width you want to pass through. The extra length rests on the side where the gate parks when open.

Because of this, the clear opening and the gate's total length are two different measurements, and both matter when planning the entrance.

Measuring the Clear Opening Correctly

Measure the distance between the posts or walls on each side, from inside edge to inside edge, at the height where the gate will run. Measure at the top, middle and bottom, because uneven ground or a slightly out-of-line post can change the figure.

  • Measure the opening at several heights
  • Note any obstacles such as curbs, pillars or slopes
  • Record the free space on the side where the gate will park open

Space Needed Beside the Opening

The side where the gate travels when it opens needs a clear, flat stretch free of walls, plants, vehicles and steps. Without this space the gate cannot fully open and the mechanism may be overloaded. Plan for the gate's full length to be accommodated on that side.

If the property has limited room on one side, a different gate type may suit the site better, and this should be discussed before any drawing is approved.

Track, Ground and Foundation Considerations

The track must sit on level, solid ground and be fixed to a proper foundation. Uneven ground causes the gate to bind or derail over time. Drainage matters as well, since water and debris in the track can stop smooth movement.

The position of the track relative to the opening affects how much the gate overlaps when closed, so the track and the opening width should be planned together.

Safety Clearances and Standards

Safety around a moving gate is important, especially where children or pedestrians pass nearby. Gaps between the gate and fixed structures should be kept to a safe minimum, and the closing edge should be protected against crushing hazards. Exact clearance values are set by the relevant standards and are checked with the engineer for each project rather than assumed.

Guard rails and pedestrian access may also be needed in addition to the vehicle opening.

Planning the Entrance with the Factory

The best results come from measuring on site first, then drawing the gate to fit the real opening and the available side space. At Techno Kol Uzi, the process starts with photos of the entrance, followed by an on-site measurement, a drawing and written specification for approval, and only then production in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv.

Approving the drawing before manufacture avoids surprises at installation, when changes are hardest to make.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gate width the same as the opening width?

No. The gate is normally longer than the clear opening so it can overlap when closed. The extra length sits on the side where the gate parks when open.

What if my opening is uneven at the top and bottom?

Measure at several heights and use the narrowest figure as the reference. Uneven posts or walls should be noted and considered in the drawing.

Do I need space on both sides of the gate?

You need clear space on the side where the gate travels when open. The other side only needs to accommodate the posts and the closed gate overlap.

Can I measure the opening myself?

You can take a rough measurement yourself, but an on-site measurement by the manufacturer is needed before the gate is designed to fit exactly.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is making the gate the same length as the opening, which leaves no overlap when closed. Another is ignoring the space needed beside the entrance for the gate to park when open.

Our recommendation

Before ordering, have the opening and the parking side measured on site at several heights, and approve a drawing that shows both the gate length and the clear space it needs. This prevents costly changes during installation.

Summary

The opening width sets the clear passage, but the electric sliding gate must be designed longer than that opening and needs free space to travel. Measure on site and approve a drawing before production.
