Why bars are so common in Israel

Many Israeli apartments, especially on the ground and first floors, have bars on windows and balconies for security. In higher floors, families often install them mainly for child safety. Because each window is different, most bars are made to measure rather than bought off the shelf.

Bow (belly) bars

The lower part bulges outward, leaving room for plants or for opening the window inward.

Fixed bars on every window can trap people in a fire. It is strongly recommended that at least one window in the home has an openable bar with a lock that adults can release quickly from inside. For child safety, spacing between bars and the absence of climbable elements matter.

Steel is the classic choice for strength. Outdoors, especially near the sea, it should be hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated. Aluminum does not rust like steel and needs very little maintenance, which makes it a good choice for coastal homes.

Finishes and colors

Powder coating in an oven gives a hard, even finish in almost any RAL color. Most people match the bar color to the window frame or the building facade. A shared building may have rules about the color and design of bars.
