Window Grille Measurement: A Practical Sizing Guide
t265-28

To measure for a window grille, record the width and height of the opening at three points each, then use the smallest figures and check depth and obstructions. Measure to the inside of the frame or wall recess, not to the outer edge of the window. Send these numbers with photos to the factory so the grille can be drawn and made to fit precisely.
Why Accurate Window Grille Measurement Matters
A security bar that is even a little off can rattle, leave gaps for a hand to reach through, or refuse to fit at all. Since every grille is made to measure in our factory, the numbers you send us become the blueprint for the whole product. Careful measuring saves a return visit and keeps the installation clean.
Most window openings are not perfectly square, and walls may be slightly out of line. That is normal, and it is exactly why we check each opening and plan the grille around its real shape.
Tools You Will Need
You do not need professional equipment to take good measurements. A steel tape measure, a pencil, a notebook and a helper for long spans are usually enough.
- Steel tape measure, preferably 5 meters or longer
- A small level or a smartphone level app
- Notepad and pencil, or a photo of a sketch
- A straight edge or spare ruler for tight corners
Measuring Width and Height Step by Step
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, then do the same for the height at the left, center and right. Write down all six figures. Use the smallest width and smallest height as your base, since the grille must fit within the narrowest point.
Measure from the inside edge of the frame or the wall recess where the grille will sit. Keep the tape straight and avoid bending it around corners, as this adds false length.
Checking Depth, Recess and Obstructions
Depth tells us how far the grille frame can be fixed into the wall or frame. Measure how deep the recess is and note any sills, handles, hinges, shutters or pipes that could interfere with the bars or the mounting brackets.
If the window opens outward or has a roller shutter box above it, mention this in your notes. These details affect how the grille can be hung and whether it needs to open or stay fixed.
Using Photos and Sketches to Support Your Numbers
Photos taken straight on, plus one or two from an angle, help us understand the opening at a glance. Include a tape measure in one photo so scale is clear. A simple hand sketch with your measurements written on it is equally useful.
Photos also show the surrounding wall, tiles and any fixtures, which helps us plan a neat finish around the frame.
When to Ask for an On-Site Measurement
Self-measuring works well for simple rectangular windows in good condition. However, if the opening is irregular, the wall is uneven, the window is high up, or the design includes curves or special finishes, an on-site measurement is the safer choice.
Our team can visit, verify your figures, and prepare a written specification for your approval before production begins. This confirms the details and avoids surprises at installation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I measure the window frame or the wall opening?
Measure the space where the grille will actually sit, which is usually the inside of the frame or the recess in the wall. Note both if the frame is set back, so we can plan the fixing correctly.
How many measurements should I take?
Take three width and three height readings, one at each point across the opening. Use the smallest numbers you recorded as your base dimensions.
What if my window is not perfectly square?
This is common and does not prevent a good fit. Send all your measurements and photos, and we will account for the difference when drawing the grille.
Do I need to measure the depth as well?
Yes, depth helps determine the mounting method and frame profile. Measure how far the recess goes and note any obstructions near the opening.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common error is measuring only once and using the largest figure, which leaves the grille too big to fit. Measuring to the outer edge of the window rather than the inside of the frame is another frequent mistake.
Our recommendation
Write down every measurement with a clear note of where it was taken, and send photos with a tape measure visible. If in doubt about an irregular opening, ask for an on-site measurement before ordering.
Summary
Take multiple readings of width, height and depth, use the smallest values, and support them with photos or a sketch. Accurate measurements lead to a grille that fits properly the first time.
