Curved Glass Railing Installation for Balconies and Stairs

t349-29

t349-29

A curved glass railing is built from panels cut or bent to match the arc of a balcony or staircase, fixed to a steel base with precise spacing and secure clamps. Success depends on accurate on-site measurement, a detailed drawing of each curve, and a fabrication process that accounts for glass tolerances. Techno Kol Uzi manufactures these railings to measure in our Tel Aviv factory and installs them after client approval.

Why curved glass railings need a different approach

A straight glass railing can be planned from a few reference points, but a curved balcony or spiral staircase changes the geometry at every panel. Each segment has its own angle, its own height relative to the floor, and often its own relationship to the slab edge. Treating the curve as a series of straight runs usually leads to visible gaps, uneven top lines and stress on the glass clamps.

For this reason we treat every curved run as a separate design problem. The goal is a continuous, smooth handrail line and evenly spaced glass that looks intentional from every viewpoint.

Measuring the curve on site

Accurate measurement is the foundation of the whole project. Our technician records the curve at several points, noting the radius where possible, the height of the finished floor, the slab edge profile and any obstacles such as columns, drains or wall returns. Photographs with a reference measurement help the drawing team later.

  • Measure the inner and outer edges of the slab or stair stringer
  • Record finished floor levels at each change of direction
  • Note wall finishes, tiles and any protrusions at the base

Measurements taken before finishes are applied should be rechecked after tiling or plastering is complete.

Drawing and specification for curved glass

Once measurements are confirmed, we prepare a written specification and a drawing that shows each panel, its arc length, the glass thickness, the clamp positions and the handrail profile. Curved glass is typically laminated and must be ordered to the exact cut shape, so the drawing is reviewed carefully before production starts.

The specification also states the base system, the fixing method to the slab or stringer and the finish of the steel components. Where exact structural values are needed, we confirm them with the project engineer rather than assuming them.

Fabrication in our Tel Aviv factory

At our factory on Rival Street, steel base channels and handrail sections are cut and bent to the drawn curve, then checked against a template before finishing. Glass is ordered to the same template dimensions and allowed for normal tolerances, so that the panels fit the steel frame without forcing.

Sections are finished by hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating depending on the location and the chosen look. Each piece is labeled to match the drawing, which keeps installation on site quick and orderly.

Installation on balconies and spiral stairs

On site, the base channel is fixed first and aligned to the drawn curve, since everything else depends on it. Glass panels are then set in sequence, with clamps tightened evenly so no panel carries an uneven load. Handrails are fitted continuously along the curve and checked for smoothness by hand and by eye.

On spiral stairs, panels are installed in the order of the rise, and the final alignment is checked from the bottom and the top. Expect the work to take longer than a straight run of equal length.

Safety, standards and final checks

Balcony and stair railings in Israel should be designed with the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 in mind. We refer to its general requirements during design, but the exact dimensions, loads and fixing details for each project are checked with the responsible engineer. We do not apply values from memory.

Before handover we inspect the clamps, the glass edges, the handrail continuity and the fixings to the structure, and we walk the full run with the architect or site manager to confirm the result matches the approved drawing.

Frequently asked questions

Can glass be bent into a tight curve on site?

Standard tempered and laminated glass is not bent on site. Curved runs are made from glass cut and shaped to the drawn arc in advance, which is why accurate measurement comes first.

How do you keep the handrail smooth around a curve?

The handrail is bent in the factory to the measured radius and joined with careful alignment. A template check before installation helps confirm the line is continuous.

Is a curved glass railing suitable for a spiral staircase?

Yes, when the drawing accounts for the changing angle and height at each step. Installation is sequenced carefully and checked from both the bottom and top of the stair.

Who confirms the structural details of the railing?

The project engineer confirms the loads, fixings and dimensions for each project. Our team works from their values and the applicable standards rather than estimates.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring a curve as a few straight lines, which causes uneven gaps and a broken handrail. Another is ordering glass before the final floor and wall finishes are confirmed on site.

Our recommendation

Ask for a full-size template or a detailed drawing of every curved panel before production, and confirm measurements again after finishes are applied. Involving the railing fabricator early in the design stage saves time and avoids costly adjustments.

Summary

Curved glass railings succeed through careful on-site measurement, a precise drawing of each panel, and factory fabrication matched to the real curve. Work with a fabricator who checks every step before installation.
