Double Gate Center Post Installation for Wide Driveways

t274-11

t274-11

A double gate center post is a fixed post set between the two leaves of a wide driveway gate, giving each leaf a solid stop and keeping the pair aligned. It must be set in a deep, properly poured footing and plumbed exactly, because any movement shows up as sagging or misaligned leaves.

What a Center Post Does

On a wide driveway, two gate leaves meet in the middle. The center post, sometimes called a split post or meeting post, gives both leaves a rigid point to close against. Without it, the leaves can drift, overlap unevenly or fail to lock.

The post also carries the load of the leaves when they swing, so it is one of the most important parts of the whole installation. It has to be stiffer than the gate, not just a decorative column.

Planning the Layout Before Digging

Measure the full opening, then mark the exact centerline. Both leaves should be the same width, with the center post sitting on that line. Check the swing direction and make sure the leaves can open fully without hitting the post, the pillars or parked cars.

  • Confirm the ground is level or plan for a slope
  • Locate buried pipes and cables before digging
  • Decide whether the leaves swing in or out

Footing and Foundation

The center post carries more stress than a standard fence post, so its footing must be deeper and wider. Concrete is poured around a steel base or anchor so the post cannot pull out or tilt over time. Allow the concrete to cure fully before hanging any leaves.

Exact depths and reinforcement are set by the engineer for your gate weight and wind exposure. Do not guess these values from another project.

Plumbing and Alignment

Set the post perfectly vertical in two directions, checking with a level on the front and side. Even a small lean will force the leaves out of line. Temporary bracing is useful while the concrete sets.

Once the post is fixed, hang the leaves and check that the gaps at the top, middle and bottom are even. Adjust the hinges before making the final connection to the post.

Fitting the Latch and Stops

The center post usually carries the latch or drop bolt that locks the leaves together. Position it at a comfortable height and make sure it engages smoothly from both sides. A ground drop bolt or stop is useful to keep the leaves from swinging past their closed position.

Test the closing action several times. The leaves should meet at the same point each time without forcing.

Finishing and Protection

Steel posts should be protected against corrosion before installation. Hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating gives long-lasting protection, especially near the coast or in damp soil. Finish the post in the same color as the leaves so the gate looks like one piece.

Seal any gap between the post base and the concrete to keep water from collecting at the joint.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just use a normal fence post as a center post?

A standard fence post is not designed to carry the swinging load of two heavy gate leaves. The center post needs a larger section and a deeper, reinforced footing to stay straight over time.

How do I know the leaves are perfectly aligned?

Check the gaps at the top, middle and bottom with a tape measure, and make sure the leaves close flush at the center post. Even gaps and smooth latching mean the alignment is correct.

Can the center post be installed after the leaves are hung?

It is better to set the post first, because the leaves are hung against it. Installing afterward makes it difficult to achieve even gaps and proper alignment.

Who decides the footing size for my gate?

The footing depends on the gate weight, width and wind exposure, so it should be confirmed by the engineer before work begins.

Common mistakes to avoid

Setting the center post on an uneven centerline or pouring the footing too shallow are the most common errors. Both lead to sagging leaves and a gate that will not latch properly.

Our recommendation

Measure and mark the centerline twice, and have the engineer confirm the footing before pouring. Hang the leaves only after the concrete has fully cured.

Summary

A well-built center post with a deep footing, true alignment and proper protection keeps a wide double gate closing smoothly for years.
