Fixing Handrails to Glass Balustrade Systems: Process Guide

t362-21

t362-21

Handrails on a glass balustrade are fixed through the glass clamps or a continuous top channel, so the handrail must be measured, drawn and produced to match the exact glass and post layout. A proper installation starts with on-site measurement, a written specification and client approval, followed by factory production, finishing and fitting on site.

Step 1: Inquiry and Photos

The process starts with a short inquiry. Send photos of the staircase or balcony, the glass panels, the posts or floor fixings, and the wall where the handrail will end. Photos help us understand the existing layout before anyone visits the site.

  • Photos of the whole run and the top and bottom landings
  • Notes on the existing glass thickness, if known
  • Whether the handrail should be wall-mounted, glass-mounted or both

This early information lets us spot potential issues, such as an unusual glass height or a fixing point that needs reinforcement.

Step 2: On-Site Measurement

A technician measures the staircase or balcony on site. We record the exact length of each run, the height of the glass and the position of every clamp or post. Measurements are taken at several points, because walls and floors are rarely perfectly straight.

Where the glass is already installed, we check how the clamps are spaced and whether the top rail has a channel. These details decide which handrail profile and bracket type will fit correctly.

Step 3: Drawing and Written Specification

After measurement we prepare a drawing and a written specification. The drawing shows the handrail path, the bracket positions, the joints and the wall ends. The specification lists the materials, profile dimensions, finish and fixing method.

Safety rules for guardrails in Israel are set by the Israeli standard SI 1142. This page does not list exact values; the engineer checks the required height, load and spacing against the standard for your specific project before the design is approved.

Step 4: Client Approval

Nothing goes into production until you approve the drawing and specification. Please check the handrail length, the material, the finish colour and the bracket layout. If something does not look right, tell us before approval, because changes after production are harder to make.

Once approved, the order is confirmed and the job is scheduled for the factory.

Step 5: Factory Production and Finishing

The handrail is cut, shaped and assembled at our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Steel parts are typically hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection and then powder coated in the chosen colour. Stainless steel handrails are polished or brushed instead.

Working in the factory allows us to control joints, bends and fit before anything reaches the site, which keeps the installation faster and cleaner.

Step 6: Installation on Site

The handrail is installed on the glass system according to the approved drawing. The technician fixes the brackets or clamps, mounts the rail, checks alignment and tightens every connection. Gaps at wall ends are finished neatly, and the installed rail is checked for firmness by hand.

Once the handrail is fixed, we clean the glass and the metal and confirm the work matches the approved specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can a handrail be fixed directly to glass?

Usually the handrail is fixed to the glass through clamps or brackets designed for glass thickness, or to posts and a top channel. Direct fixing to the glass itself is not recommended unless the system is designed for it.

Do I need to measure before ordering?

Yes. We measure on site so the handrail length, bracket positions and joints match the real staircase or balcony exactly.

Which finishes are available for the handrail?

Steel handrails are typically hot-dip galvanized and powder coated, while stainless steel handrails are polished or brushed. The finish is chosen during the specification stage.

How long does the process take?

Timing depends on the size and complexity of the job and on factory scheduling, so we confirm the timeline after the specification is approved.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering a handrail without checking the glass thickness and clamp spacing often leads to brackets that do not fit. Skipping the approval of the drawing can also cause costly changes after production.

Our recommendation

Before production, ask the installer to confirm the bracket type against your exact glass thickness and check that the handrail height meets the applicable standard with the engineer. This single check prevents most fitting problems.

Summary

Fixing a handrail to a glass balustrade works best when every step, from measurement to installation, is planned and approved before production begins.
