Welding Handrail Joints: What Happens in Production

t362-12

t362-12

Handrail welding joints are made in the factory after the railing geometry is checked against the drawing and the site measurements. Each joint is fitted, welded with controlled heat, then ground and finished so the seam is clean and ready for galvanizing or powder coating.

Why the joint matters before welding starts

A handrail is only as sound as the points where its pieces meet. Joints carry the load of people leaning and gripping, so their quality decides whether the railing feels solid for years. The work starts well before the torch is lit, with a clear drawing that shows where every bend, corner and connection will sit.

Good planning also decides how the finished railing looks. Joints placed in visible positions need a different finish than those hidden behind a wall or a post, and the drawing records that choice so the workshop knows what to expect.

Measuring on site and checking the drawing

Before production we measure the opening, the slope of the staircase or balcony, and the height of the railing above the floor or tread. Small differences between the plan and the real building are common, so we compare the site numbers with the drawing and note any gaps.

  • Overall length and height at each landing
  • Angle of the stair slope and any wall irregularities
  • Position of posts, fixings and existing finishes

The written specification then confirms the profile, wall thickness and joint type the client has approved.

Cutting, fitting and tacking in the workshop

Each tube or flat bar is cut to length and the ends are prepared so the parts meet with an even gap. The pieces are then fitted together in a jig, which holds the angles steady while the joint is tacked. Checking the fit at this stage is far cheaper than correcting a finished welded corner.

Once the tacks hold, the assembly is checked again for straightness, twist and the position of each connection against the drawing before any full weld is made.

Welding the joint with controlled heat

The full weld is laid along the joint in passes that fill the gap completely and fuse the parts without leaving voids. Heat is kept moderate so the metal does not distort, since warping spoils the line of the railing and makes later fitting harder.

After welding, the assembly is allowed to cool naturally and is measured again. Any movement caused by heat is corrected at this point, while the piece is still in the workshop and easy to handle.

Grinding, finishing and surface protection

Weld seams are ground flush with the surrounding metal so the joint reads as one continuous line. The aim is a smooth surface that feels good to the hand and will take coating evenly, with no sharp ridges or pits left behind.

Depending on the project, the finished railing goes to hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating. Surface preparation before coating matters, because a rough or contaminated seam can show through the final finish.

Installation and final checks on site

On site, the railing is fixed to the posts, wall or floor using the approved fixings. We check that the top rail runs level or follows the staircase slope as drawn, that gaps between balusters meet the requirements, and that every joint sits without strain.

For compliance with the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, we confirm the final dimensions with the engineer, since exact values depend on the building and use.

Frequently asked questions

Are handrail welded joints stronger than bolted ones?

A properly welded joint gives a continuous connection that suits many railing designs well. The right choice depends on the load, the profile and the design, which the engineer reviews.

Will the weld marks show after the railing is finished?

Seams are ground and prepared before coating, so they can be made nearly invisible. Visible or hidden joint positions can be agreed at the drawing stage.

Can the joint positions be changed after approval?

Changes are possible before production starts. Once cutting and welding begin, adjustments become harder, so it is best to settle the layout early.

How do you prevent the railing from warping during welding?

We fit parts in a jig, tack them first, use moderate heat and let the piece cool before final measurement. Any movement is corrected in the workshop.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering a railing from a sketch without site measurements, or leaving the joint positions unspecified, often leads to fitting problems and rework. Both issues are easy to avoid by confirming the drawing before production starts.

Our recommendation

Ask for the drawing with joint positions marked and approve it in writing before cutting begins. Request a site measurement visit if the staircase or balcony is not yet finished, so the railing matches the real building.

Summary

Handrail welding joints are planned from measurements, fitted in a jig, welded with controlled heat, ground smooth and finished for protection. A clear drawing and early approval keep the process accurate from workshop to installation.
