Handrail Fabrication Process: From Measurement to Installation
t362-10

Handrail fabrication is a sequence of measuring the site, preparing a written drawing, cutting and welding the steel or stainless profiles in the workshop, applying a protective finish, and installing the rail on the building. Each stage is confirmed with the client before the next one begins, which keeps the final result accurate and safe.
Step 1: Inquiry and Photos
Every handrail project starts with a simple conversation. You send us photos of the staircase, balcony or ramp, and tell us where the rail should run and what material you have in mind. Photos help us spot details early, such as the wall type, existing railings we may need to replace, and any obstacles near the edge.
At this stage we also talk about the look you want, whether that is a plain round tube, a flat bar profile or a glass infill, so the next steps match your taste and the building.
Step 2: On-Site Measurement
Our team visits the site to measure the actual length, height, angles and anchor points. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, so measuring on the spot is far more reliable than working from plans alone.
- Total run length along the stairs or balcony edge
- Height at each point and any change of slope
- Wall material and where the posts or brackets will be fixed
- Clearances to nearby doors, windows and corners
Step 3: Drawing and Written Specification
Based on the measurements, we prepare a drawing and a written specification. It lists the profile sizes, material grade, welding method, finish and fixing details. You receive these documents to review before anything is cut.
If the building or your engineer requires specific dimensions, we check them against the applicable Israeli railing standard SI 1142 and confirm the exact values with the engineer, rather than guessing.
Step 4: Client Approval and Production
Once you approve the drawing and specification in writing, production begins in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv. Profiles are cut to length, bent where the rail changes direction, and joined by welding. Our workshop has been operating since 1945 and the work is still done by hand with careful checking at each stage.
We check straightness, alignment and the fit of every joint before moving on, so problems are caught in the workshop rather than on your staircase.
Step 5: Grinding and Protective Finish
After welding, the joints are ground smooth so the rail feels comfortable to hold. For outdoor and steel handrails, we apply hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, which protects the metal from moisture and weather. Stainless steel rails are polished to the finish you choose.
The finish is chosen according to where the rail will live. A balcony exposed to sea air needs a different protection level than an indoor staircase.
Step 6: Installation on Site
Our installers bring the finished rail to the building and fix it using posts, brackets or base plates suited to the wall or floor. We check the height, level and tightness before leaving. Small adjustments can be made on site if the building differs slightly from the drawing.
After installation we walk through the rail with you, explaining how to keep the finish clean and what to look for over time.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the handrail fabrication process take?
The timeline depends on the size of the project and the finish chosen, and we confirm it with you after the drawing is approved. Measurement and drawing come first, so planning details are settled before production starts.
Do you measure on site or work from plans?
We measure on site whenever possible, because real walls and floors often differ from plans. Accurate measurements lead to a better fit and fewer changes later.
What finishes are available for handrails?
We offer hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating for steel, and polished finishes for stainless steel. The right choice depends on whether the rail is indoors or exposed to weather.
Can I change the design after approving the drawing?
Changes can be made before production starts, and we will update the drawing and specification for your approval. Once cutting and welding begin, changes become more difficult and may affect cost and timing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Ordering a handrail based only on a rough sketch without on-site measurement often leads to a poor fit. Skipping the written specification can also cause confusion about the finish and fixing method.
Our recommendation
Measure your staircase or balcony carefully or have us do it, and review the drawing thoroughly before approving it. Choose the finish based on exposure to weather, not just appearance.
Summary
Handrail fabrication moves through inquiry, on-site measurement, drawing, approval, workshop production, protective finishing and installation. Following these steps ensures a rail that fits, lasts and meets your expectations.
