Planning Handrail Extensions at Stair Top and Bottom

t362-7

t362-7

A handrail extension is the short horizontal section that continues the rail beyond the last tread at the top and bottom of a stair, so the hand has support during entry and exit. Plan the extension length, wall or post returns and fixing points before production, because these details cannot be changed easily once the rail is galvanized and powder coated.

Why Extensions Matter at Stair Ends

The top and bottom of a stair are where people most often lose balance, because the step rhythm changes and the body is still adjusting. A rail that stops abruptly at the last riser gives no support at the moment it is needed most.

Extensions also help the rail read clearly as a continuous guide. Builders detailing stair ends should treat the extension as part of the stair design, not as an afterthought added once the flights are set.

Measuring the Stair Ends On Site

Measure on site after the stair structure and floor finishes are in place, since screed or tile thickness changes the actual height. Record the rail height at both ends, the horizontal distance from the last riser to the wall or landing edge, and the position of any newel or post.

  • Finished floor level at top and bottom
  • Distance from the last nosing to the proposed return
  • Wall material and thickness for fixings
  • Any obstruction such as doors, switches or radiators

Photograph each end with a tape in view so the drawing can be checked later.

Choosing the Extension Layout

Common options are a straight extension parallel to the floor, a return that turns into the wall, or a short drop into a newel. The right choice depends on how much clear space the landing has and whether the stair is open on one or both sides.

Points to decide early

Decide whether the rail returns into a wall or ends on a post, and whether the end should be rounded or closed. Each choice changes the bending work, the fixing method and the appearance of the finished corner.

Drawing and Specification Approval

After measurement we prepare a drawing showing the rail profile, extension lengths, return directions, fixing positions and the finish. A written specification accompanies the drawing and lists the material, dimensions and coating.

Please review the drawing carefully and confirm the lengths, wall positions and finishes in writing. Changes made at this stage are quick, while changes after production require remaking parts.

Production and Finishing in the Factory

Once approved, the rail sections are cut, bent and welded in our Tel Aviv workshop. Joints at the extension are ground and checked so the line is smooth to the hand. Finished parts then go through hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating, which protects the steel against corrosion.

Every piece is test-fitted against the drawing where possible, so the installation crew arrives with parts that match the measured stair ends.

Installation and Final Checks

Installation starts with fixing the posts or wall brackets, then aligning the rail along the stair and the extensions at each end. Check the height, the gap to the wall and the grip comfort by running a hand along the full length. Confirm that the fixings are secure and that the extensions line up with the flight rail.

Compliance with the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 should be verified with the engineer, who confirms the exact values for your project.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a handrail extension be?

The extension length depends on the stair layout and the landing space available. It is usually set during the on-site measurement and confirmed on the drawing with the engineer.

Should the rail return into the wall at the top and bottom?

A wall return is common because it removes a sharp end that could catch clothing or hands. Whether it suits your stair depends on the wall material and the clear width of the landing.

When should I send the stair measurements to the factory?

Send them after the stair structure and floor finishes are complete, since these change the true rail height. Early photos are useful, but final dimensions should come from a site measurement.

Can extensions be added to an existing handrail?

In many cases yes, if the existing rail and fixings allow it. We check the current rail on site before proposing a way to add the extension.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measuring before the floor finishes are complete and ordering the rail to the wrong height is the most common error. Leaving the return direction undecided until installation also causes costly remaking.

Our recommendation

Mark the planned rail line and the extension ends on the wall with tape before ordering, and have the engineer confirm the heights. This simple check prevents most fit problems at stair ends.

Summary

Plan handrail extensions from accurate site measurements, a clear drawing and an approved specification before production begins. This keeps the top and bottom of the stair safe and the installation smooth.
