Commercial Handrail Specifications: Our Process Explained

t362-47

t362-47

Commercial handrail specifications define the height, profile, materials, finish, fixing method and load requirements for railings in a building. At Techno Kol Uzi, specifications are confirmed through on-site measurement, a written drawing and client approval before any production begins.

Why Specifications Matter in Commercial Projects

In a commercial building, handrails are part of the safety and daily-use design of stairs, ramps, balconies and common areas. Changing a handrail after installation is costly, so the specification should be settled early and in writing.

A good specification covers the handrail's position, height, profile shape and dimensions, material such as iron, aluminum or stainless steel, the finish, how it is fixed to the structure, and the performance it must meet. Clear documentation also helps the architect, contractor and building committee agree on one version of the project.

Step 1: Inquiry and Site Information

The process starts with an inquiry. Send photos of the location, the building plans if available, and a short note on the use of the space, such as a staircase in an office lobby or a ramp in a residential complex.

  • Type of area and expected traffic
  • Preferred material and finish
  • Applicable design drawings or architect's requirements

Step 2: On-Site Measurement

Our team measures the site in person. We record the stair or ramp angle, the wall or floor construction, the exact position of fixing points and any existing obstacles. Measurements taken on site prevent errors that often occur when working only from drawings.

For railings that must follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, we check the relevant requirements on the project. Exact values are confirmed with the project engineer, not assumed.

Step 3: Drawing and Written Specification

After measurement, we prepare a drawing and a written specification. The document lists the profile type, dimensions, materials, connection details, fixing method, finish and installation sequence.

The client reviews the drawing and can request changes at this stage. Nothing goes into production until the specification is approved in writing.

Step 4: Production and Finishing

Once approved, the handrail is manufactured in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv, which has operated since 1945. Components are cut, welded and assembled to the approved drawing.

For steel elements we use hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating where the project calls for corrosion protection and a consistent appearance. Stainless steel parts are finished to the agreed surface treatment.

Step 5: Installation and Final Check

Installation follows the approved sequence. Our fitters fix the handrail to the structure using the agreed method, then check alignment, height, continuity and the tightness of every connection.

  • Verify fixing points against the drawing
  • Check alignment and level
  • Confirm the finish is undamaged

A final walkthrough with the client or site supervisor closes the job.

Frequently asked questions

What details should a commercial handrail specification include?

It should include height, profile, dimensions, material, finish, fixing method, and the standard or performance requirements that apply to the project. Drawings make the details clear to everyone involved.

Do you measure on site before preparing the specification?

Yes. We measure the site in person so that fixing points, angles and existing conditions are recorded accurately before any drawing is made.

Can the specification be changed after approval?

Changes can be made before production starts. Once manufacturing begins, changes may affect timing and cost, so we recommend finalizing details at the approval stage.

Which materials are used for commercial handrails?

We work with iron, aluminum and stainless steel. The right choice depends on the location, exposure to weather, appearance and the requirements set by the designer or building committee.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is approving a handrail based only on drawings without on-site measurement, which leads to misaligned fixing points. Another is leaving the finish and fixing method undefined until installation day.

Our recommendation

Confirm the full specification in writing, including the finish and fixing method, before production starts, and have the site measured by the supplier. This small step saves time and avoids rework on live buildings.

Summary

A clear commercial handrail specification, built from on-site measurement and an approved drawing, makes production and installation predictable. Techno Kol Uzi follows this process from inquiry to final check.
