Gate Latch and Lock Options Installed During Fencing

t306-28

t306-28

A fence gate latch installation is planned together with the fence, not added afterward, so the latch, lock, hinges and posts line up correctly. Choose the latch type based on security needs, how often the gate opens, and whether children or pets are present. Our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv, makes the gate and hardware to measure, and the exact placement is confirmed on site.

Why the latch is planned before production

A gate latch is only as good as the frame and post it is fixed to. When the latch is considered during fencing, the gate leaf, stop plates and post reinforcement can be prepared in the workshop, so the mechanism sits square and closes without forcing. Adding a latch later often means drilling into finished galvanized or powder-coated steel, which can compromise the coating and weaken the connection.

Planning early also avoids gaps where the latch and the catch do not meet. This is one of the most common reasons a gate sags or rattles after a few months.

Latch and lock options to consider

The main choices differ in convenience and security level:

  • Gravity or spring latch: closes automatically and suits gates used many times a day.
  • Thumb latch: simple, traditional and good for low-traffic garden gates.
  • Keyed lock: adds real security for a private property or a shared building entrance.
  • Keypad or electronic lock: useful when residents or delivery staff need access without keys.

For security, a keyed or electronic lock should be combined with a solid gate and a catch that is fixed firmly to the post.

Measurement and site check

During the on-site visit we measure the opening, the gate height, the post positions and the ground level. We also check where the latch should sit so that it is comfortable to reach from the outside and, if needed, from the inside. For children, the handle height and the child-proof options are discussed together with the household.

Any electrical supply for an electronic lock is noted at this stage, so the cable route is planned before the posts are set.

Drawing, specification and approval

After measurement we prepare a drawing and a written specification showing the gate type, latch model, lock position, hinge arrangement and finish. You review it and confirm the details before production starts. Changes are cheaper at this stage than after the gate is welded and coated.

The specification also records which side the gate opens, whether the latch is handed left or right, and any keying requirements.

Production and finishing in the factory

The gate frame is fabricated in our Tel Aviv workshop with reinforcing plates where the latch and lock are mounted, so the hardware carries load properly. Components are then finished, typically by hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating for iron, or powder coating for aluminum. Before the gate leaves the factory, the latch action and the catch alignment are tested.

Working this way keeps the hardware well supported and protected from weather.

Installation and final adjustment

On site, the posts are set, the gate is hung and the latch and catch are fixed. The gate is then adjusted so it closes smoothly, the latch engages fully and the lock operates without binding. Exact fixing details and load requirements are checked with the engineer, and the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 is considered where it applies to the surrounding guard structure.

After installation we walk through the operation with you, including how to adjust the catch if the ground settles over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can a latch be added to an existing fence gate?

Sometimes, but it depends on the gate and post condition. Adding one later may require reinforcing plates and can affect the finish, so an on-site check is recommended.

Which lock is best for security?

A quality keyed or electronic lock combined with a sturdy gate and a firmly fixed catch offers the best protection. The lock is only as strong as the gate and post it is mounted to.

Do you install the latch on both sides of the gate?

The mechanism is usually on one side, with the catch on the other. Which side depends on the gate swing and how you enter the property, and this is confirmed during measurement.

Is the latch suitable for children?

It can be, when the handle height and mechanism are chosen with children in mind. We discuss the household's needs during the site visit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing the latch after the gate is already coated, and placing the catch without checking alignment with the gate leaf. Both lead to poor closing and unnecessary drilling later.

Our recommendation

Decide on the latch and lock before production, mark the required height and swing on site, and ask for a written specification so the hardware, reinforcement and finish are all planned together.

Summary

Planning the gate latch and lock during fencing gives you a stronger, better-aligned gate and a cleaner finish. Measurement, drawing and approval come first, then production and installation.
