Glass Balcony Railings in Israel: Systems, Glass and Standards
glass-balcony-railings-israel

A glass railing keeps the view open while protecting people from falling. In Israel railings must meet the Israeli Standard for railings (SI 1142) and building regulations. The usual choice is laminated tempered safety glass, fixed in a base channel, to the side of the slab, or between posts.
Installation systems
Base channel
An aluminum profile anchored to the floor or slab holds the glass from below. It gives the cleanest frameless look.
Side-fixed
Stainless steel fittings attach the glass to the edge of the slab, which frees floor space.
Posts
Glass panels between steel or stainless posts. Useful when the base cannot take a continuous channel.
Which glass is used
Railings normally use laminated glass made from tempered panes. Tempered glass is strong, and the laminated interlayer keeps the glass in place if it breaks. Thickness depends on height, fixing method and load. Clear, low-iron extra-clear and frosted glass are all possible.
The Israeli railing standard
SI 1142 sets requirements for railing height, strength, openings and prevention of climbing. Exact values depend on the type of building and use, so we design according to the standard and coordinate with the project engineer or architect when needed.
Wind and high floors
On high floors and near the sea, wind loads on glass are significant. The glass, the fixings and the anchoring must be designed for these loads. A handrail on top adds comfort and extra stiffness.
Cleaning and maintenance
Glass railings are easy to clean with water and a mild detergent. Near the sea, rinsing salt off the glass and stainless fittings a few times a year keeps them looking good. Check seals and fittings periodically.
Working with us
Techno Kol Uzi is a Tel Aviv factory for iron, aluminum, glass and stainless work, operating since 1945. We measure on site, check the slab and the anchoring options, prepare a drawing and specification, and install after your approval. Prices follow measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Is a glass railing safe for children?
With laminated safety glass and correct anchoring, yes. It has no horizontal elements to climb.
Can I add glass to an existing balcony wall?
Often yes, using a channel on top of the wall, if the wall and anchoring are suitable.
Does a glass railing need a handrail?
It depends on the design and requirements. Even when optional, a handrail improves comfort and stiffness.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing glass by price without confirming it is laminated safety glass, ignoring wind on high floors, and not checking the slab before anchoring.
Our recommendation
Choose the fixing system according to the slab and the view, then confirm glass type and thickness in a written specification.
Summary
A glass railing is safe and long-lasting when the system, safety glass and anchoring are designed for the location and the standard.
