Glass Partition Installation Sequence for Fit-Out Contractors

t423-11

t423-11

Glass partitions should be installed after the floor finish is complete and the sub-floor is levelled, but before final wall finishes and ceiling closures that depend on the partition line. Coordinate the glass supplier's on-site measurement with the drywall and flooring trades so that the frame, the glass and the finishing layers all fit the same dimensions.

Why sequencing matters for glass partitions

A glass partition is a precise element. Its frame, glass panels and fittings depend on a level floor, plumb walls and a fixed ceiling line. If the trades work out of order, the partition either arrives before the space is ready or has to be adjusted on site, which costs time and risks damage to finished surfaces.

Planning the sequence early lets everyone agree on the handover points. The glass supplier needs confirmed dimensions, the drywall crew needs to know where the frame will sit, and the flooring crew needs to know where the partition base will land.

Step 1: Confirm the layout and take on-site measurements

Before any glass is ordered, the partition line should be marked on the floor and the walls. Measurements should be taken on site, not from the drawings alone, because walls and slabs are rarely perfectly straight.

  • Mark the partition line on the floor and ceiling
  • Measure height and width at several points
  • Note door openings, electrical boxes and any obstructions

Share the measurements with the glass supplier and record them in a written specification that all trades can see.

Step 2: Complete the floor preparation

The floor should be levelled and cleaned before the partition base is fixed. Where a floating or tiled finish will run under or beside the partition, decide with the flooring crew whether the finish goes in first or the partition base is set first and the finish is cut to it.

Either approach works, but the decision must be made in advance. Changing it midway usually means cutting finished tiles or boards, which is wasteful and visible.

Step 3: Fix the frame and base before the drywall closes

Drywall coordination

The partition frame and its fixing points should be installed before the drywall boards close the wall line, or the drywall crew should leave openings and backing where the frame will sit. Check that the frame is plumb and level, because the drywall edges will follow it.

Agree on who marks the fixing points and who is responsible if a fixing must be moved after the board is up.

Step 4: Install the glass after the heavy dust and wet work

Glass should go in after the wet trades such as plastering, screeding and tiling are finished, and after heavy dust work such as grinding or cutting. Dust and moisture can mark the glass and affect the seals and fittings.

  • Plastering and screeding complete and dry
  • Dust-producing work finished
  • Protective film kept on until final cleaning

Glass panels should be handled by trained installers and stored flat and protected on site until fitting.

Step 5: Finish the joints and final layers

Once the glass and frame are fixed, the joints can be sealed and the remaining finishes completed. Painting, skirting and ceiling closures are normally done last, using masking and protection around the glass.

Ask the finishing crew to avoid spraying or rolling close to the glass, and to inspect the seals after their work, not before.

Step 6: Final check and handover

At handover, check that the partition is plumb, the doors run smoothly, the seals are intact and the glass is clean and free of scratches. Any adjustment to hinges, handles or seals should be made before the client takes over the space.

Record the final state with photos. This protects all parties if a question about the installation comes up later.

Frequently asked questions

Should glass partitions be installed before or after drywall?

Usually the frame is fixed before the drywall closes the wall line, while the glass goes in after the wet and dusty work is complete. The exact order depends on the design, so agree it with the drywall crew in advance.

Who should measure for the glass partition?

The glass supplier should take on-site measurements after the walls and floor are roughly in place. Measuring from drawings alone often leads to mismatched dimensions.

Can the flooring be laid after the partition base is fixed?

Yes, this is common, but the flooring must be cut to fit around the base. Decide the order with the flooring crew before work starts.

How do I protect glass during the fit-out?

Keep protective film on the panels, store them flat and dry, and avoid nearby grinding, painting and plastering until the final stage of the work.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is installing glass before the wet and dusty trades finish, which leads to marked panels and damaged seals. Another is letting drywall close the wall line without a fixed reference for the partition frame.

Our recommendation

Hold one short coordination meeting with the glass supplier, drywall, flooring and finishing crews before work starts, and agree on a written sequence with named responsibilities. Confirm measurements on site twice: once before ordering and once before fixing.

Summary

A clear installation sequence protects the glass, avoids rework and keeps the drywall, flooring and finishing trades working in step.
