Glass Railing Site Measurement: On-Site Template Service
t349-44

Glass railing site measurement is the on-site process of recording the exact dimensions, levels and fixing conditions where a glass railing will be installed. Accurate field measurements and templates let the factory produce glass and fittings that fit the opening without rework on site.
Why Accurate Field Measurement Matters
Glass railings are made to size, and there is little room for error once the panels are cut and the hardware is drilled. A railing that was drawn from plans alone often differs from the real structure by several millimeters, because slabs settle, edges are not perfectly straight and finishes add thickness.
Measuring on site before production removes most of this risk. It shows the true run length, the actual height from the floor or slab to the top of the rail, and any steps, corners or openings that affect the layout.
What We Measure on Site
Our team records each element that affects the final fit. The list typically includes:
- Total run length and the length of each segment
- Height from finished floor to top of the handrail
- Slope and step geometry on stairs and ramps
- Corner angles and wall-to-wall distances
- Edge type: slab edge, top of wall, or fascia
- Position and type of fixing points, including posts or spigots
Templates for Complex Geometry
Where the layout is irregular, we take templates. A template is a physical or paper pattern taken directly from the opening, which shows the true shape of an angled or curved edge. Templates are especially useful for stair balustrades, balcony corners and openings that are not square.
Each template is labeled with its location and orientation so that it can be matched to the correct drawing and panel during production.
From Measurement to Drawing and Approval
After the site visit, the measurements are transferred into a drawing with a written specification. The drawing shows panel sizes, glass thickness, fixing method and the height of the handrail. We send this to the contractor or architect for approval before any glass is cut.
This step is important because it catches any mismatch between the site and the design intent while changes are still easy to make.
Working with Contractors and Architects
We work with contractors, architects and interior designers who need reliable numbers without repeated visits. Please let us know the access arrangements, the stage of the building work and whether the final floor or finish is already in place, since this changes the measured height.
When possible, we measure after the screed and tiling are finished, or we record the planned finish thickness in the specification so the final height is correct.
Preparing for the Site Visit
A few preparations make the visit faster. Have the architectural drawings ready, mark any level differences, and make sure the edges to be measured are accessible and clean. Photos of the area with a short description help us plan the visit.
Once the measurements are approved, production starts in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv, and the finished railing is installed to the recorded dimensions.
Frequently asked questions
How long before installation should the site measurement be done?
Measure once the structure is stable and the final floor or edge finish is known, ideally shortly before production starts. Measurements taken too early may not reflect later changes in level.
Do you measure from the drawings or from the actual site?
We always verify on the actual site, because drawings rarely match the built structure exactly. Drawings are useful as a reference, but the final dimensions come from the measurement.
What is the difference between a measurement and a template?
A measurement records lengths, heights and angles, while a template is a pattern of the actual shape of an opening or edge. Templates are mainly used for irregular or angled layouts.
Should the railing height follow the Israeli standard?
Railing design should follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, and the exact values are checked with the engineer for each project. We record the site conditions so the design can be verified against it.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is measuring before the final floor or edge finish is in place, which changes the railing height. Another is relying on drawings instead of checking the actual opening.
Our recommendation
Measure at the final stage of the structure, record the finish thickness, and keep photos with notes for every edge. Clear field data prevents most fitting problems later.
Summary
Accurate on-site measurement and templates are the foundation of a glass railing that fits correctly the first time. Measuring at the right stage and checking the actual structure avoids costly rework.
