Measuring Opening Tolerances for Glass Partitions

t432-29

t432-29

Glass partition tolerance measurement means checking the wall opening at several points in width, height and depth, then recording the smallest and largest readings and their variation. Because the glass is cut to a fixed size, the measured tolerance determines how much clearance, packing and adjustment space the installation must allow.

Why opening tolerances matter for glass

Glass is fabricated to a fixed size, so the wall opening has to be right before production starts. Masonry and plaster are rarely perfectly square or level, and a difference of a few millimetres across the opening can decide whether the partition fits cleanly or needs rework.

Measuring tolerances early protects the schedule and the budget of everyone on site. It also tells us how much clearance to build into the frame and where the glass edges will need shimming during installation.

Tools and preparation before measuring

Use a steel tape, a long spirit level, a plumb line or laser level, a square and a notepad or a printed sheet. Remove loose plaster, debris and any temporary coverings so the true edges are visible.

  • Confirm the floor is finished or mark the finished floor level.
  • Check that adjacent walls, ceiling and floor are complete where the partition meets them.
  • Photograph the opening from the front and at each corner.

Taking width, height and depth readings

Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, centre and right. Record every reading rather than a single average, because the extremes are what the fabrication has to allow for.

Check the depth at each corner where the glass will sit or where a frame returns into the wall. Note any step, bulge or recess that could affect the frame profile or the sealing line.

Checking squareness, plumb and level

Compare the two diagonals of the opening. A difference between them shows the opening is out of square, and the larger that difference, the more the frame will need to compensate.

Use the level and plumb line to check the top and sides. Note the direction and amount of any lean, since a partition that is not vertical can look misaligned even when it fits the opening dimensionally.

Recording the tolerance sheet

Write the minimum and maximum width, height and depth for each opening, the diagonal difference, and any out-of-plumb or out-of-level reading. Add a simple sketch that marks where each reading was taken so the fabrication team can read it without you present.

Include the finished floor level, the type of adjacent wall finish and any obstacles such as pipes, sockets or door swings. Send the sheet with your photos before production is approved.

Installation allowances and checking on site

Discuss the required clearance and the packing method with the engineer before fabrication. Exact allowance values depend on the glass type, the frame system and the load, so these are confirmed for each project rather than taken from a general rule.

  • Recheck the opening on the day of delivery, since plaster work can change it.
  • Dry-fit the frame where possible and confirm the shim positions.
  • Verify level and plumb again after fixing before sealing.

Frequently asked questions

Who should take the opening measurements?

Ideally the installer or a technician who visits the site, since they can see the real conditions. Measurements taken from drawings alone often miss plaster and finish variations.

Should I measure before or after the wall finishes are complete?

Measure after the structural and plaster work is finished, because finishes change the opening. If the measurement is taken earlier, plan to recheck it before production or delivery.

What if the opening is out of square?

Record the diagonal difference and the points where it is out of square. The frame can often absorb some variation, and the engineer will decide how it is handled in the design.

Can a glass partition be installed in an opening with a slight lean?

Often yes, provided the lean is recorded and allowed for in the frame and shimming. Large deviations should be reviewed with the engineer before fabrication starts.

Common mistakes to avoid

Taking a single measurement and using the average, or measuring before the plaster and floor finishes are complete, leads to glass that does not fit. Always record the extremes and recheck on the day of installation.

Our recommendation

Measure at least three points in each direction, record the diagonals, and send photos with the tolerance sheet before production is approved. This single step prevents most fitting problems.

Summary

Accurate tolerance measurement of the wall opening, recorded as ranges and checked before fabrication, is the foundation of a glass partition that fits and looks right.
