Measuring Steel-Look Window Openings: Homeowner Walkthrough

t437-40

t437-40

Measure each opening at its width and height in several places, using the smallest reading as your working dimension, and record the frame depth and wall finish too. Take photos, note which side each window opens, and share everything with the factory so a technician can confirm on site before production starts.

Why accurate measurements matter for steel-look windows

Steel-look profile windows are made to measure, so the frame is cut and assembled around the exact opening you give us. Small errors in an old or uneven wall can leave gaps, stress the frame, or make the window fail to close properly. Careful measuring at the start saves time, avoids rework, and keeps the final result looking clean and sharp.

Because older openings in Israeli buildings are often not perfectly square, one measurement is never enough. Plan to take several readings for every dimension before you decide on a final number.

Tools you need before you start

You do not need specialist equipment, but a few simple tools make the job much more reliable:

  • A steel tape measure, at least 5 meters long
  • A small spirit level or a long straight batten
  • A notepad or phone for sketches and photos
  • A helper to hold the far end of the tape

A pencil and a clean sketch of the wall will help you label each opening clearly.

Measuring width and height correctly

Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, and the height at the left, centre and right. Write down all six readings. Use the smallest width and the smallest height as your working dimensions, since the window must fit inside the narrowest point of the opening.

Measure from one finished surface to the other, such as plaster to plaster or tile to tile, and state clearly whether the reading includes the existing frame or not. If an old frame is still in place, tell us, because we will usually need the clear opening once it is removed.

Checking depth, corners and the wall around the opening

Measure the depth of the reveal, which is how far the wall extends from the outside face to the inside face. This determines the frame profile and how the window sits in the wall. Also check whether the corners are square by measuring both diagonals. If the two diagonal readings differ noticeably, the opening is out of square and this must be reported.

Note any cracks, damp patches, protruding pipes, or irregular plaster, and photograph them. Such details affect installation and are much easier to plan for before the order is made.

Recording the opening direction and details

For each window or door, record how it opens: outward or inward, left or right, top-hung, side-hung or fixed. Mark which side the handle should be on when you stand outside looking in. Also note the floor level and any nearby fixed items, such as shutters, air conditioning brackets or built-in furniture, that could interfere with opening movement.

  • Opening direction for each unit
  • Handle side and any locking requirements
  • Nearby obstacles and their position

Sending your measurements and what happens next

Send us your sketch, the six readings for each opening, depth, diagonal checks and clear photos from inside and outside. Our team reviews the information and, where needed, arranges an on-site measurement to confirm the figures before anything is produced. You will then receive a written specification and drawing to approve.

Once you approve the specification, production takes place in our factory on Rival Street in Tel Aviv, followed by finishing and installation. Confirming the measurements on site is the step that protects you from surprises, so please do not skip it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to measure again if the opening was built to a standard size?

Yes. Building openings often vary slightly from the drawings, so measure each one individually. Standard sizes on paper do not always match what was actually built.

Should I measure the old window frame or the opening?

Measure the clear opening in the wall, as this is what the new window must fit. If the old frame is still in place, tell us so we can account for it during on-site confirmation.

What if my walls are not straight or square?

This is normal in many buildings. Record the diagonals and any irregularities with photos, and our team will advise how the window can be fitted to the actual opening.

Can I send my measurements by phone or WhatsApp?

Yes, you can send your readings and photos by WhatsApp. We will review them and let you know whether an on-site measurement is needed to confirm the final dimensions.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is taking only one measurement and assuming the opening is uniform, which often leads to a window that does not fit. Forgetting to note the opening direction and handle side is another frequent error that causes extra work later.

Our recommendation

Measure every opening at least three times in each direction, write the smallest reading on your sketch, and let a technician confirm on site before you approve the order.

Summary

Accurate measurements of width, height, depth and diagonals, combined with clear photos and opening details, give your steel-look windows the best chance of a precise fit.
