Racking Access Handrail for Warehouse Pallet Racking
t356-46

A racking access handrail is a guarded rail fitted at the point where staff step onto pallet racking, mezzanines or platforms, giving a secure hold during climbing and descent. It should be sized, positioned and fixed to match the access route and the load and traffic in your facility. Techno Kol Uzi designs and manufactures these handrails to measure from a site survey.
Why access points need handrails
Many warehouse falls happen at the transition between floor and rack, where staff step onto a bottom beam, a ladder or a platform edge. Access points are often used briefly but repeatedly, and workers frequently carry loads or wear gloves, which makes grip less reliable.
A fixed handrail gives a consistent hold at exactly the spot where balance is most at risk. It also reduces the temptation to use the rack itself as a handhold, which is a common cause of frame damage.
Where to position the handrail
Position the handrail at the access point so that a worker can grip it before the first step and keep a hand on it until both feet are stable on the platform or beam. Consider the direction of approach and whether people use the route from one side or both.
- Check clear space so the rail does not block pallet forks or shelf loading
- Keep the rail away from moving equipment paths
- Plan for the height of the tallest regular user
Materials and finish for a warehouse
Steel is the usual choice for its strength and resistance to impact from equipment. Hot-dip galvanizing protects the rail in damp or dusty conditions, and powder coating adds a visible colour that helps staff spot the access route quickly.
Choose a finish that suits your environment, and discuss the frame connection with the engineer so the handrail is fixed to a suitable part of the structure.
Standards and checks
Handrail design for access routes is governed by recognised safety standards, including the Israeli railing standard SI 1142. Exact dimensional and load requirements should be confirmed with a qualified engineer for your specific rack and platform, rather than taken from general guidance.
Ask for a written specification that records the dimensions, fixing method and finish before production starts.
How the job is done with us
The process starts with an inquiry where you send photos of the racking and access point. We then carry out an on-site measurement and prepare a drawing and written specification for your approval.
After approval, the handrail is produced in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv, finished, and installed on site. This keeps the fit accurate to your actual racking.
Keeping the handrail effective
A handrail only protects people if it stays secure. Include it in routine safety walks and check fixings, welds and finishes regularly. Report any impact damage promptly so it can be repaired or replaced.
Brief your team that the rail is meant to be used for every climb at the access point, not only occasionally.
Frequently asked questions
Is a racking access handrail the same as a standard rack guard?
No. A rack guard protects the frame from impact, while an access handrail gives people a grip when stepping on or off the rack. Many facilities use both where needed.
Can a handrail be added to existing racking?
In many cases yes, provided the fixing point is suitable and the rail does not interfere with loading. A site measurement is needed to confirm this.
How do I know the right height?
The height should suit the tallest regular user and the access step. Confirm final dimensions with the engineer and your safety coordinator.
Do you make the handrail to measure?
Yes. Every handrail is designed and manufactured to measure in our Tel Aviv factory, based on your site survey and approved drawing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Fitting a handrail without measuring the access route, or placing it where it blocks forks or loading, leads to rails that staff ignore. Ignoring the fixing point or finish for damp and dusty conditions also causes early failure.
Our recommendation
Survey the access point with the people who use it every day, mark the step and grip positions, and have the rail specified in writing before production. A correctly placed rail is used far more consistently than one added as an afterthought.
Summary
A well-positioned, properly fixed racking access handrail gives warehouse staff a secure hold at the most vulnerable point of the climb.
