Steel-Look Door Welding and Assembly: How It Is Made

t446-23

t446-23

Steel-look doors are built from profiles that are cut to measure, welded into a rigid frame, then assembled with hardware and finished before installation. Quality depends on accurate measurement, clean welds, square and flat assembly, and a finish that protects the metal. Each stage is checked before the next one begins.

Measurement and Planning

Every steel-look door starts with an on-site measurement. Our team checks the opening width and height at several points, the wall depth, the floor level and the direction of opening. Small differences in a wall can change the frame, so we measure rather than rely on drawings alone.

The measurements are turned into a written drawing and specification that the client approves before production. This sheet lists the profile type, glazing or panel infill, hinge positions, locking points and the finish colour.

Cutting and Preparing the Profiles

Once approved, the Belgian steel-look profiles are cut to length with mitred or square ends depending on the design. Accurate cutting is the foundation of a good weld, because gaps at the joints are hard to fix later.

  • Check each profile length against the drawing
  • Deburr cut edges so the parts sit tightly together
  • Mark hinge and lock positions before welding

Welding the Frame

The frame is welded by hand in a jig that holds the corners square. Tacking first fixes the position, then the full welds are made along the joints. The weld should be continuous, with good penetration and no porosity, so the frame behaves as one rigid unit.

After welding, the weld areas are ground flush and smoothed so the joints disappear under the finish. Excess heat is managed to limit distortion, and the frame is checked again for twist and squareness.

Assembly and Fitting

With the frame stable, panels or glazing are fitted and the hardware is installed: hinges, handle, multipoint lock and seals. Each moving part is tested in the factory so the door opens, closes and locks smoothly before it leaves the workshop.

Checks at this stage

  • Diagonal measurements for square
  • Gap consistency around the leaf
  • Smooth hinge action and lock engagement

Finishing and Protection

Finishing protects the steel from corrosion and gives the desired look. Depending on the specification, the door may be hot-dip galvanized before powder coating, which combines zinc protection with a durable colour layer. This two-step approach suits Israeli weather, including coastal humidity and summer heat.

Surfaces are inspected for coating thickness, colour consistency and any damage from handling. Protective film or packaging is applied before transport to the site.

Installation on Site

Installation is planned around the wall condition and the sequence of work on site. The frame is set plumb and level, fixed to the structure, and the gaps are sealed. We check that the door closes evenly and that the lock aligns before we consider the job complete.

If the building has settled or the opening differs from the drawing, the frame is adjusted on site rather than forced into place, which protects both the door and the wall.

Frequently asked questions

Why is welding quality so important in a steel door?

The welds carry the load and keep the frame square over time. Poor penetration or gaps can cause twisting, sagging and difficult locking.

How is the door kept square during welding?

The profiles are held in a jig while they are tacked and welded. Diagonal checks are repeated after welding to confirm the frame has not distorted.

Is the weld visible on the finished door?

The weld areas are ground and smoothed before finishing, so the joints blend into the surface. A well-finished door should look seamless.

Can the door be adjusted if the wall is not perfectly straight?

Yes, the frame can be set and adjusted during installation to suit the opening. Exact requirements are confirmed with the engineer for each project.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common error is ordering from a rough sketch without on-site measurement, which leads to frames that do not fit the opening. Another is skipping a check of the weld and finish quality before installation.

Our recommendation

Ask for a written drawing and to see the assembly and finishing steps before approval. Confirm the finish type, such as galvanizing plus powder coating, so the door suits your location.

Summary

Steel-look doors are measured, cut, welded, assembled, finished and installed in clear stages, and each stage affects the final build quality.
