Choosing the Right Gate Motor Power for Your Gate Size

t292-11

t292-11

The right gate motor power depends mainly on the gate's weight, its length, how often it opens and the local wind exposure. Measuring these factors on site and matching them to a motor rated above the gate's real load gives the most reliable and long-lasting result.

Why gate weight and length decide the motor

The motor has to move the full weight of the gate, and a longer or heavier leaf asks more of it at every opening and closing. Two gates of the same width can need very different motors if one is solid steel and the other is open iron bars. For this reason, the starting point is always the actual weight and length of the finished gate, not just its opening width.

  • Gate leaf weight, including infill and finish
  • Leaf length and whether it slides or swings
  • Frequency of use per day

Measuring your gate on site

At Techno Kol Uzi we visit the site and measure the opening, the clear space needed for the leaf to travel, the ground condition and the position of the posts. We also note the slope of the driveway and any obstacles that could block a sliding track. These measurements feed directly into the written specification, so the motor is chosen from real site data rather than estimates.

Please send photos and rough dimensions when you first contact us. A proper on-site measurement then confirms the final figures before anything is produced.

Matching power to use and environment

A gate used by a single household a few times a day has different needs from a gate serving a building committee or a busy parking area. Frequent use calls for a motor with a higher duty rating and better heat handling. Wind exposure matters too: a large, open gate facing a strong gust needs extra holding capacity so it does not drift or strain the mechanism.

  • Light residential use with a small leaf
  • Heavy or frequent use with a long leaf
  • Exposed sites with strong wind

From drawing to approval

After measurement we prepare a drawing and a written specification that lists the gate type, dimensions, material, finish and the recommended motor class. You review it and approve it before production starts. This step prevents surprises, because you see exactly what will be built and why the chosen motor suits it.

Any change you request at this stage is noted in the specification so the factory and the installer work from the same document.

Production and finishing in our Tel Aviv factory

The gate is cut, welded and assembled in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Structural members are sized to carry the weight the motor will move, and the frame is checked for square and alignment before finishing. Finishing options include hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating, which protect the steel against Israeli weather and salt air.

Keeping the frame straight and balanced reduces the load on the motor over its working life.

Installation and checks after fitting

On site, the installer sets the posts or track, fixes the motor and runs the gate through a full cycle to confirm smooth travel. We check that the leaf moves without binding, that the motor does not strain at the ends of its travel, and that safety features behave correctly. For railings and safety-related fittings, general guidance follows Israeli standard SI 1142, and exact values are confirmed with the engineer on the project.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply choose the most powerful motor available?

A more powerful motor is not always better, because it can put extra stress on the frame and hinges. The best choice is a motor matched to the actual gate weight and use, with a sensible margin for wind and frequent operation.

Does a sliding gate need a different motor from a swing gate?

Yes, the two types load the motor differently. A sliding gate carries its weight along a track, while a swing gate pivots on hinges, so each needs its own motor class and setup.

What information should I send to start?

Send photos of the opening, rough width and height, the approximate gate type and how often it will be used. This lets us plan the measurement visit efficiently.

Do you measure on site before recommending a motor?

Yes, we always measure on site and prepare a written specification for your approval before production begins.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing a motor only by the opening width, or ignoring wind and daily use, often leads to a gate that struggles or wears out early. Always base the choice on the finished gate's real weight and conditions.

Our recommendation

Measure the finished gate weight, plan for daily use and exposure, and choose a motor with margin rather than the minimum rating. Confirm the choice with a site measurement before production.

Summary

Matching gate motor power to the gate's real weight, length and use gives smooth, reliable operation. Measure on site and approve a written specification before production.
