Connecting Access Control Readers to a Parking Barrier
t460-24

A parking barrier is connected to access control readers through a dry-contact or relay interface that sends an open signal from the controller to the barrier's control board. Good integration depends on planning the cable route, confirming the barrier's input options, and testing the full sequence before handover.
Planning the Integration Before Production
Successful integration starts with a clear plan. Before any steel is cut, confirm which access control system is in use, where the readers and the controller will sit, and how the barrier will be triggered: by card, by remote, by loop detector, or by a combination of these.
- Reader type and communication method
- Controller location and power supply
- Required open, close and status signals
- Safety devices such as loops or photocells
Writing these points down early prevents changes once the barrier is already in production.
On-Site Measurement and Cable Route
Our technician visits the site to measure the barrier footprint, the boom length, and the distance between the barrier and the reader posts. We also mark the duct route for control cables, keeping low-voltage control wiring separate from motor power cables to reduce interference.
Note the position of the reader relative to the driver's window, since a reader placed too far or too close will cause frustration at every entry.
Drawing and Written Specification
After measurement we prepare a drawing and a written specification. The document lists the barrier model, boom size, the wiring diagram between the controller and the barrier board, and the signal types to be used. Exact electrical values are confirmed with the project engineer and the barrier supplier.
The client, or the integrator on their behalf, reviews and approves the document before production begins.
Production and Finishing in the Factory
Once approved, the steel frame, mounting base and boom support are produced in our Tel Aviv workshop. Structural parts are finished by hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the exposure of the site, so that the barrier resists weather and vehicle contact over time.
Mounting points for the control box and cable entries are prepared at this stage, so installation on site goes faster and cleaner.
Installation and Wiring on Site
On installation day the base is set, the barrier is fixed and levelled, and the boom is balanced. The integrator then lands the control cables from the access controller to the barrier board, connects the safety loops, and checks that every signal is correctly polarised and labelled.
- Verify open and close commands from each reader
- Test loop and photocell safety stops
- Confirm status feedback to the controller
Testing and Handover
Final testing runs the full sequence many times: card read, boom rise, vehicle pass, boom fall, and any fault or timeout behaviour. We recommend the integrator document the settings and the wiring map and hand a copy to the site manager, so future maintenance is simple.
A short training session for the building administrator covers normal operation and what to do when the barrier is manually released.
Frequently asked questions
Can any access control reader be connected to a parking barrier?
Most readers can be connected if the controller offers a relay or dry-contact output that the barrier board accepts. Confirm compatibility during the planning stage.
Do I need safety loops with a parking barrier?
Safety loops or photocells are strongly recommended so the boom does not close on a vehicle. The exact layout is agreed during measurement and planning.
Where should the reader be placed?
The reader should be within comfortable reach of the driver without leaning out, and positioned so the card or remote can be used without blocking traffic.
Who handles the wiring between the controller and the barrier?
The access control integrator usually handles the signal wiring, while Techno Kol Uzi provides the barrier structure, base and mounting points prepared for that work.
Common mistakes to avoid
Routing control cables alongside motor power cables and skipping the loop test often causes random misreads and false stops. Both are easy to avoid with planning and a full sequence test before handover.
Our recommendation
Share the access controller model and the barrier board details with us at the inquiry stage, and ask for the conduit route to be marked on the drawing before production starts.
Summary
Connecting access control readers to a parking barrier works best when planning, measurement, production and wiring are done in order, with testing before handover.
