Installing a Parking Barrier Base Plate Step by Step

t460-20

t460-20

A parking barrier base plate is installed by measuring the site, setting the plate level on a prepared concrete footing, anchoring it with the specified fixings, and then verifying alignment before the barrier arm is mounted. Each stage follows the approved drawing and specification, so the plate must be checked against that document before any concrete is poured or fixings are tightened.

Start with the site survey and approved drawing

Before any work begins, confirm the approved drawing and written specification for the barrier. Measure the proposed position on site, check the distance to the lane edge, and confirm that underground services are located and marked. Photograph the area so the crew and the client share the same reference.

  • Check the plate position against the drawing
  • Mark services and access routes
  • Confirm the footing dimensions with the engineer

If anything on site differs from the drawing, stop and raise it with the office before continuing.

Prepare the footing and set the anchor layout

Excavate the footing to the depth shown on the drawing and make sure the base is firm and clean. Place the reinforcement as specified and set the anchor layout in its marked positions. The anchor pattern must match the base plate holes exactly, so use a template where possible.

Keep the anchors straight and at the correct height above the finished surface. Protect the threads with tape or caps so they stay clean until the plate is fitted.

Pour the concrete and allow proper curing

Pour the concrete to the specified mix and consolidate it around the anchors to avoid voids. Keep the anchor ends clear of concrete where the plate will sit. Protect the fresh surface from rain and fast drying, and allow the concrete to reach the strength stated in the specification before loading the barrier.

Do not rush this stage. A footing that has not cured properly will move under the barrier's operation and affect alignment.

Set the base plate level and fix it

Lower the base plate over the anchors and place it on levelling nuts or shims. Check it with a spirit level in both directions and adjust until it sits flat and at the correct height. Confirm the orientation so the barrier arm will swing in the right direction.

  • Check level in two directions
  • Confirm orientation before tightening
  • Fit washers and nuts as specified

Tighten the nuts evenly in a cross pattern, then recheck the level after tightening.

Check alignment and prepare for the barrier

With the plate fixed, check its alignment against the lane and the reference marks. Measure the diagonals and the distances between key points to confirm the plate is square to the drawing. Check that the mounting holes and any cable or conduit entries are clear and ready for the barrier unit.

Record the final measurements in the site log so the installation can be verified later.

Final inspection and handover

Complete a final visual and measured inspection before mounting the barrier. Check that all fixings are tight, the plate is level and aligned, the area is clean, and any protection has been removed from the threads. Confirm the work matches the drawing and specification, and note any open points for the office.

Hand over with photos of the installed plate and the completed checklist so the client and the factory have a clear record.

Frequently asked questions

Can the base plate be fitted before the concrete has fully cured?

No. The footing must reach the strength stated in the specification before the plate is loaded. Fitting too early can cause movement that affects alignment.

How do I check that the base plate is level?

Use a spirit level in two directions across the plate surface and adjust the levelling nuts or shims until it reads level. Recheck after the final tightening.

What if the anchor holes do not line up with the plate?

Stop and check the anchor layout against the drawing and template. Do not force the plate, as this can damage the anchors or the plate. Raise the issue with the office.

Do I need to check the exact tolerances myself?

Confirm the exact values with the engineer and the approved specification. Work to those documents rather than to general estimates on site.

Common mistakes to avoid

Fitting the plate onto a footing that has not cured or is out of position is the most common error, and it is costly to correct. Tightening the nuts before checking level and orientation also causes avoidable rework.

Our recommendation

Always do a dry fit of the plate over the anchors before final tightening, and check level and orientation at that stage. Record the measurements as you go so any issue is caught while adjustment is still easy.

Summary

Survey the site, prepare and cure the footing, set the plate level, check alignment, and complete a documented final inspection before mounting the barrier.
