Surface Finishing Steps for Outdoor Parking Barriers
t460-14

Outdoor parking barriers are protected by a sequence of steps: cleaning the steel, hot-dip galvanizing for base corrosion protection, and powder coating for color and an extra protective layer. The finish is chosen after measurement and agreed in a written specification before production starts.
Start with measurement and a written specification
Every parking barrier at Techno Kol Uzi is planned from an on-site measurement. We check the opening width, the mounting surface, the height needed and the exposure of the spot, such as direct sun, sea air or a covered garage entrance. These details decide how much protection the barrier needs.
The result is a drawing and a written specification that lists the material, the finishing steps and the color. You review it and approve it before any cutting or welding begins, so nothing is left to guesswork.
Preparing the steel before any coating
Coatings only last when the surface underneath is clean. After cutting and welding, the steel is checked for weld spatter, sharp edges and oil or dust from handling. Rough spots are ground smooth so the next layer can bond evenly.
- Remove weld slag and spatter
- Round sharp edges
- Degrease the surface
- Inspect joints before finishing
Hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion protection
For outdoor use, the most important step is galvanizing. The steel is dipped in molten zinc, which forms a metallurgical bond with the iron. Zinc protects the steel even where the surface is scratched, because it corrodes first and slows rust underneath.
Galvanizing also covers the inside of hollow sections, which paint alone cannot reach. This is why it is the base layer for parking barriers exposed to rain, humidity and salty air.
Powder coating for color and extra protection
After galvanizing, the barrier can be powder coated in the color the client selected. The powder is applied electrostatically and then cured in an oven, which creates a hard, even layer. It adds a second line of defense against wear, scratches and UV fading.
Powder coating is optional but recommended when appearance matters, for example at a residential building entrance or a commercial lot. The color is confirmed in the specification before production.
Quality checks between the steps
Each stage has a check before the part moves on. After galvanizing we inspect the surface for bare spots, uneven zinc or drips. After powder coating we check color, coverage and surface finish against the approved sample.
Parts that do not meet the specification are corrected at this stage, not after installation. This keeps the final barrier consistent with what the client approved on paper.
Installation and protecting the finish on site
The barrier is delivered and installed according to the approved drawing. Our installers handle the finished surface carefully, using protective padding and avoiding chains or tools that scrape the coating. Fixings and anchor points are checked to suit the ground or wall they are mounted on.
Afterwards, touch-up is only needed where the coating was damaged during transport or fitting. Simple cleaning with water and a mild soap each season helps the finish last longer.
Frequently asked questions
Why is galvanizing used before powder coating?
Galvanizing gives the steel a durable zinc layer that resists rust, even if the surface is scratched. Powder coating on top adds color and an extra protective layer.
Can I choose only powder coating without galvanizing?
For outdoor parking barriers we recommend galvanizing as the base layer, because paint alone may not protect hollow sections or damaged spots as well. The exact finish is confirmed in the specification.
How is the finish color chosen?
The color is selected by the client from the available options and confirmed in the written specification before production begins. Samples can be discussed during the planning stage.
How do I keep the barrier finish in good condition?
Clean the surface periodically with water and a mild soap, and avoid abrasive tools. Report any chipped spots early so they can be touched up before corrosion starts.
Common mistakes to avoid
A common mistake is choosing a finish without describing the exposure, such as sea air or direct sun, which leads to the wrong protection level. Skipping the written specification can also cause disagreements about color and coating after installation.
Our recommendation
Tell us where the barrier will stand and how exposed the spot is, and we will recommend the finishing sequence during the measurement visit. Approve the written specification before production so the finish matches your expectations.
Summary
Parking barriers are protected through cleaning, hot-dip galvanizing, optional powder coating and careful installation, all planned from a measurement and a written specification.
