Gate Post Measurement: Alignment and Level Installation Guide

t278-1

t278-1

Gate post measurement means recording the exact clear opening, post centers, post height and ground level before a gate is built. Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, check that posts are plumb and level, and allow for the swing and the hardware. Accurate numbers taken on site prevent a gate that binds, sags or sits crooked on the posts.

Why Accurate Post Measurement Matters

A gate is only as good as the opening it fits into. If the posts are out of alignment by even a small amount, the leaf will rub, the latch will miss the catch, and the hinges will carry weight they were never designed for. Measuring carefully before fabrication saves time and avoids rework.

Take the measurements yourself or have someone check them with you. Write every number down, mark it on a simple sketch, and note which side of the property each post is on. Clear notes make it much easier to explain the requirement to the workshop.

Tools You Need on Site

You do not need specialist equipment, but a few tools make the job reliable:

  • A steel tape measure and a long level or laser level
  • A plumb bob or a torpedo level for checking vertical alignment
  • A string line stretched between the posts
  • A pencil, a notebook and a photo of each post

Check the tape against a known length before you start so that small errors do not carry through the whole measurement.

Measuring the Opening Width and Post Spacing

Measure the clear opening between the faces of the posts, not the center-to-center distance, unless your fabricator asks for center-to-center. Take the reading at the top, middle and bottom of the opening. If the three numbers differ, the posts are not parallel, and this must be noted before a gate is designed.

Points to record

  • Clear width at top, middle and bottom
  • Post face-to-face distance and post width
  • Distance from the post to any wall or fence it meets

Checking Post Height and Ground Level

Measure post height from the finished ground level, not from the bottom of the post buried in concrete. Check whether the ground slopes, because a gate fitted to a sloping drive needs a clear ground clearance at the lowest point. Mark the height on both posts and compare them. Posts at different heights will make the gate look wrong even if it hangs correctly.

Exact clearance values depend on the gate type and the surface it passes over, so confirm them with the engineer before the design is finalized.

Confirming Alignment and Level Before Installation

Use a plumb bob or level on each post to confirm it is vertical. Then stretch a string line between the two posts at the top and at the bottom and check that the posts sit in the same plane. Measure the diagonals of the opening: if they are equal, the frame is square. Unequal diagonals mean the posts are out of square and should be corrected before the gate is made.

From Measurement to Production and Installation

Once the measurements are confirmed, send them with photos and a simple sketch to the workshop. A written specification is then prepared and sent for your approval. The gate is produced in the factory, finished with hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, and transported to site for installation.

Installation is easier when the posts were measured accurately, because the gate can be hung on the existing posts without forcing or shimming. Ask the installer to recheck the level and clearance once the gate is hung.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the gate opening from the inside or the outside of the posts?

Measure the clear opening between the faces of the posts that the gate will close against. Note the post width separately so the fabricator can account for it.

What if my posts are not perfectly level?

Small deviations can often be corrected during installation, but a large difference should be reported before fabrication. The fabricator can design the gate to suit the actual posts.

Do I need to measure center-to-center distance?

It depends on how the fabricator works. Many prefer clear opening plus post width, but center-to-center can also be recorded to avoid confusion.

Can I measure gate posts on my own?

Yes, with a tape, a level and a string line. Taking the readings yourself and sending photos helps, but a site visit by the workshop is recommended for an accurate specification.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measuring only once and at one height is the most common error, as posts often vary across their length. Forgetting to account for ground slope or the post width can leave the gate too tight or too high.

Our recommendation

Take each measurement three times, at top, middle and bottom, and record all of them. Send the notes together with clear photos so the workshop can confirm the design before production starts.

Summary

Accurate gate post measurement covers opening width, post height, ground level and alignment. Careful notes and a check of level and square lead to a gate that fits and operates smoothly.
