Double Swing Gate Clearance: How to Plan It Right

t278-3

t278-3

Double swing gate clearance is the free space needed for both gate leaves to open fully without hitting walls, posts, parked vehicles or the ground. Before ordering, measure the opening, the swing path of each leaf and the space behind and in front of the gate, then confirm the angle with a drawing.

What Clearance Means for a Double Swing Gate

Clearance is the room a gate needs to move. With a double swing gate, two leaves open outward or inward from a central line, and each leaf sweeps a half-circle. If anything sits inside that arc, such as a wall corner, a light fixture, a plant bed or a parked car, the gate will stop short or get damaged.

Owners often focus only on the width of the opening. The swing path matters just as much, because a leaf that clears the post at 90 degrees may still strike a pillar partway through its travel.

Measuring the Opening and the Swing Arc

Start by measuring the clear opening between the posts, from face to face. Then mark the path of each leaf on the ground with a string or chalk, from closed to fully open. Measure the distance from the hinge line to any obstacle along that arc.

  • Opening width, measured at top, middle and bottom
  • Distance from each hinge to walls and corners
  • Height of curbs, slopes and drainage channels
  • Space needed for a vehicle to pull in and out

Exact dimensions for the gate and posts are confirmed with our engineer during the on-site visit.

Planning Around Vehicles and Walkways

A gate that opens cleanly on an empty drive can block a car if the vehicle is parked where the leaf swings. Think about how you park, where guests stop and whether a delivery van needs to turn. Mark a typical parked car on your drawing and check that both leaves clear it.

Pedestrian gates in the same wall should not conflict with the main leaves. If the path is narrow, consider whether a single leaf or a sliding gate would suit the space better.

Our Process: Inquiry to Drawing

You begin by sending photos of the entrance and a short description of how the gate will be used. We then visit the site to measure the opening, the posts, the ground level and the swing arc. Based on these measurements we prepare a drawing and a written specification showing leaf sizes, hinge positions and the clearance we have verified.

You review the drawing and approve it before anything goes into production. Changes at this stage are simple and inexpensive compared with changes after installation.

Production and Finishing at Our Factory

Once approved, the gate is manufactured at our workshop on Rival Street in Tel Aviv, where we have worked since 1945. Frames are cut and welded to your measurements, hinges are set to the planned swing angle and the leaves are checked for square before leaving the shop.

Steel gates are typically hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated for protection outdoors. The finish is chosen together with you, based on the look you want and the exposure at the entrance.

Installation and Final Check

On installation day, the posts are set level and plumb, and the hinges are aligned so both leaves swing evenly. We open and close the gate several times, checking for contact with walls, posts, the ground and any parked vehicle. Adjustments to stops and latches are made on the spot.

Before we leave, we walk through the operation with you so you know how the gate moves, how to latch it and what to avoid parking near.

Frequently asked questions

How much space behind a double swing gate do I need?

The space needed depends on the leaf width and the opening angle, so there is no single figure. We measure the actual swing arc on site and confirm the clearance on the drawing before production.

Can a double swing gate open against a wall?

Only if the wall is far enough from the hinge line that the leaf never touches it through its full travel. Otherwise the gate may be limited to a smaller opening angle or changed to a different style.

Do I need to move my car to open the gate?

If a parked vehicle sits inside the swing arc, yes, the gate cannot open fully. Planning the parking area in advance avoids this and is part of the drawing review.

Should I measure the clearance myself before contacting you?

Yes, a few photos and rough measurements help. We still do a precise on-site measurement before approving the design, so your estimate is only a starting point.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring only the opening width and ignoring the swing path of each leaf. Forgetting to account for parked cars, curbs and slopes can leave a gate that looks correct on paper but cannot open fully.

Our recommendation

Mark the full swing arc on the ground with string or chalk and park a car in its usual spot before deciding on leaf sizes. If the arc is tight, ask about a sliding or single-leaf alternative early in the planning.

Summary

Good double swing gate clearance comes from measuring the opening, the full swing arc and every obstacle before production. A verified drawing protects you from a gate that cannot open fully.
