How to Measure a Gate Opening Correctly Before Ordering

t278-0

t278-0

To measure a gate opening, record the clear width between the posts or wall faces at three heights, the clear height from the ground to the underside of the lintel, and any slope or obstacles in the gate's path. Always measure on site, note where the ground is uneven, and send these numbers with photos before production starts.

Why accurate measurement matters

A gate is made to measure, so every millimeter of the opening matters. A gate that is even slightly too large will rub against the posts, and one that is too small leaves an ugly gap. Good measurements save time, avoid rework, and make sure the finished gate opens and closes smoothly for years.

Measure the opening yourself or ask the manufacturer to visit. Either way, the numbers you give should come from the actual site, not from old plans or memory.

Tools you need

You do not need specialized equipment, but a few basic tools make the job much easier and more accurate:

  • A steel tape measure, preferably 5 meters or longer
  • A spirit level or a long straight board with a level on it
  • A notepad or phone for recording numbers and taking photos
  • A helper to hold the tape at the far end of the opening

Measure on a dry day if possible, since wet or muddy ground can hide the true surface.

Measuring the width of the opening

Measure the clear width from the inner face of one post or wall to the inner face of the other. Take the measurement at the top, middle and bottom of the opening. Walls and posts are rarely perfectly parallel, so the three readings may differ.

  • Record the smallest of the three readings as the critical width
  • Note any protrusions such as pillar caps, light fittings, or meter boxes that reduce the usable space
  • Mention whether the gate will open inward or outward

Measuring the height and ground conditions

Measure the clear height from the finished ground level to the underside of the lintel or beam above the opening. If the driveway will be paved or raised later, measure the height you expect the final surface to reach and say so in your notes.

Check the slope of the ground under the gate path. A sloping driveway may need a gate that follows the grade, and uneven ground changes where the bottom of the gate sits. Use a level to show the difference between the two posts, and mark any dips or humps.

Allowing for clearances and swing

A gate needs room to move, so the finished gate is always slightly smaller than the opening. The manufacturer will set the actual clearances based on the hinges, the posts and the type of gate, and will confirm exact values with you in the written specification.

  • Check that the gate can swing fully without hitting a car, a wall or a plant bed
  • For sliding gates, measure the length of track space available on one side
  • For electric gates, note where the motor and power supply will be placed

What to send before ordering

To make the quote and drawing process smooth, prepare a short package for the manufacturer. Include the three width readings, the height reading, a note on slope, and clear photos of the opening from the front and from the side. A photo of the posts and the surrounding area helps identify any issues you may have missed.

Also share what you want: swing or slide, solid or open design, and the finish you prefer. Once the drawing and written specification are approved, production starts in the factory, and installation follows after finishing is complete.

Checking the drawing before approval

Before you approve the drawing, compare it with your notes. Make sure the overall size, the gate position, the swing direction and any extra features match what you intended. Ask about anything that is unclear, such as how the gate meets an uneven surface or how it fits between existing posts.

A careful check at this stage prevents surprises later, because changes after production are much harder to make than changes on paper.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the width at one point or several?

Measure at the top, middle and bottom of the opening and use the smallest reading. Walls and posts are often not perfectly parallel, so this protects the fit.

Do I need to subtract clearance myself?

No. Send the actual opening measurements and the manufacturer will calculate the gate size and the clearances needed for hinges and movement.

What if my driveway is going to be paved after the gate is installed?

Tell the manufacturer about the planned final ground level. Height and bottom clearance depend on the finished surface, so this information is essential.

Can I send photos instead of a site visit?

Photos help a lot, but for an accurate result, especially on slopes or complex posts, an on-site measurement is recommended before the drawing is made.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistakes are measuring only once, measuring to the outside of the posts instead of the clear opening, and forgetting to account for the final ground level after paving. Always check the numbers twice before sending them.

Our recommendation

Measure the clear opening at three heights, record the smallest width and the height to the lintel, and photograph the site from two angles. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the drawing against your numbers before production starts.

Summary

Accurate measurements of width, height, slope and clearances, supported by clear photos, lead to a gate that fits well and opens smoothly.
